Baseball Goes Deep Three Times in Win over Hood

Capobianco, Barry and Elzinga go yard in Spartan win

YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 14-2 MAC Commonwealth win over Hood College on an overcast Tuesday afternoon in York. The Spartans rebounded after a pair of losses at Eastern this past weekend as York makes a final push to earn their way into the five team 2022 Commonwealth tournament.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got it rolling in the first as Robby Elzinga drew a lead off walk. He came around to score two batters later when Joe Capobianco ripped a line drive home run to left center to put York up 2-0.
• York padded the lead in the third with a four-run inning. Capobianco had an RBI single and eventually scored on an Andrew Santarpia RBI single. Michael Tinneny drove in Santarpia with a RBI single and Brendan Martin came around to score on an error for the 6-0 lead.
• The Blazers broke up the shutout in the fourth with a single run but the Spartans responded with three more runs. The first run came on a Capobianco RBI ground out. Jack Barry then blasted a two-run homer to deep right for the 9-1 advantage.
• York continued the offensive onslaught in the fifth as Elzinga came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Elzinga drilled a grand slam to right center as the lead ballooned to 13-1.
• The Spartans got their final run in the bottom of the eighth on a Chris Nesensohn RBI ground out. Hood got a run in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.
• The offensive outburst was more than enough for Spartan starter Zach Reed as he allowed one unearned run in seven innings of work. He allowed three hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
