Second Half Surge Propels #6 Spartans to 12-Straight Win

YORK, Pa. - No. 6 York men's lacrosse out-scored Widener 14-2 in the second half in an 18-6 victory at Widener to improve their win streak to 12 and remain undefeated in conference play.

The Spartans used a 6-1 third-quarter run to break out of a 4-4 halftime tie and capped off the win with an 8-1 fourth quarter margin. Ben Mayer had a pair of goals to lead York in the third-quarter rally, with Ethan Greene and Ames Clark also registering a pair of points in the period.

How It Happened
York put six shots on goal in the first five minutes of play and came away with a 2-0 lead with tallies by Ames Clark and Jack Grayson. The Pride responded with a pair of goals just over a minute apart to tie the game midway through the first quarter and then tallied a go-ahead goal two minutes later. York squandered away four-straight possessions to end the first quarter as Widener held a 3-2 edge.

Jarrod Marenger evened up the score just over three minutes into the second quarter after a flurry of Spartans shots missed the mark in the early moments of the period. Three minutes after Marenger's tally, Grayson found the back of the net again on a restart in York's offensive zone to put the Spartans back in the lead, 4-3, with 9:44 left. York remained on the hunt for more, but Pride netminder Keegan Billie denied the Spartans four times down the stretch as his offense returned the favor with a goal in the final minute to take a 4-4 tie into halftime.

Billie racked up 12 first half saves as the Spartans threw a barrage of 19 shots his way. Despite a perfect 10-for-10 effort by Vinny Facciponti at the faceoff dot and a 21-13 edge in ground balls, the Spartans were held in check by the Pride's efforts.

Ethan Greene and Gunnar Reynolds netted a pair of goals two minutes apart in the opening minutes of the third quarter as the Spartans took advantage of their transition game. The Pride responded with a goal off a faceoff win, but Facciponti and Hugo Spencer combined to go 5-for-5 to end the quarter as York went on a 4-0 run during that span. Ben Mayer delivered a back-breaking goal with 14 seconds left as he finished off an assist from Eben Ordakowski to give York a commanding 10-5 lead.

Dylan Wolf and Mayer scored extended the lead to seven less than three minutes into the fourth as they tallied goals 32 seconds apart. York sealed the deal with three goals in a three-minute span by Will Harnick and JD Townsend to take a 16-6 lead with 6:19 left. Facciponti and Spencer kept all the momentum on York's side down the stretch as they finished the game 5-for-5 again at the dot.
