Men's Lacrosse Locks Up Commonwealth Top Seed in Memorable Win Over Stevenson

YORK, Pa. - No. 6 York men's lacrosse captured the Commonwealth's regular season crown and posted their 13th-straight win of the season in a 12-8 victory over rival No. 13 Stevenson Wednesday night at Kinsley Field. The loss for the Mustangs is their first-ever in regular season conference play since joining the MAC Commonwealth a decade ago.

The Spartans broke a 7-7 fourth quarter tie with a four-goal run to take an 11-7 advantage with 7:14 left. The first three goals of that run were scored 1:25 apart with two scored by Dylan Wolf. York went on to hold Stevenson to just one more goal on three shots in the final seven minutes of play as the Mustangs turned the ball over five times during that span, three of them caused by Spartan defensemen.

York also celebrated numerous individual milestones on the night. Senior goalie Jack Michael became the all-time wins leader in program history with his 54th career win, graduate student Ryan Kennedy set the single-season caused turnover record with 46 and Wolf recorded his 100th career goal.

How It Happened
Despite a 12-3 edge in shots and a 4-2 margin in faceoff wins, the Spartans only found themselves ahead by one, 3-2, at the end of one quarter of play. After surrendering the first goal of the game to the Mustangs, York countered with a three-goal run by Zach Mentzer, Ames Clark and Dylan Wolf in less than a three-minute span. Stevenson goalie Marc Poust cut the deficit back one as he heaved a shot into an vacant net with 2:59 left in the first.

Both offenses were held in check in the second as they each accounted for one goal each. The Spartans managed to only put four of their 10 shots on target and lost the turnover battle, 6-5. York owned a 22-10 shot margin at halftime with a 6-3 edge if faceoff wins, but Poust kept Stevenson in the mix with seven first half saves.

The two teams went blow for blow in the third quarter with each side scoring three each. Ben Mayer had the first and third goals of the quarter for the Spartans, including a crucial tally with 54 seconds left to put his team back in front, 7-6, at the end of the third.

The Mustangs started the fourth quarter on the man-advantage and cashed in on a Ryan Coleman tally 50 seconds into the period. Stevenson went on to win the next two faceoffs, but it did not matter as Michael made a trio of early saves and York pumped in three-straight goals in 1:25 span to jump out to a 10-7 lead with 12:01 left. Mayer delivered the dagger with 7:14 left to put York ahead by four and the defense locked it down from there as Ryan Kennedy and Mason Smith combined for three caused turnovers down the stretch.

The Spartans return home Thursday for a Commonwealth Semifinal round matchup against an opponent yet to be determined.
