#12 Spartans March Past #14 Messiah in Commonwealth Showdown

York officially clinches a spot in the Commonwealth postseason with the win

GRANTHAM, Pa. - No. 12 York women's lacrosse throttled No. 14 Messiah, 20-7, on the road Wednesday evening in a battle of the Commonwealth's last two remaining undefeated teams. With the win, the Spartans secured their spot in the MAC Commonwealth postseason for the second-straight season.

York jumped on the Falcons early and often, opening the game on an 8-0 before Messiah got on the board 3:26 into the second quarter, and took a 10-goal lead midway through the third quarter. Teresa Matthias led the scoring onslaught with a career-high six tallies, while Chloe MacDonald picked up a career-high tying 11 draw controls to fuel the offensive prowess.

Team Records
#12 York 10-5 (6-0 MACC)
#14 Messiah 10-4 (4-1 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans controlled the possession in the first quarter and used it to their advantage by jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a 10-4 shot margin. York kept the momentum on its side with a 4-1 advantage in draw controls, led by three from Chloe MacDonald. Madison Kurland scored a pair of York's four first-quarter goals and Bella Garabo stopped all four of Messiah's shots in the quarter.

Teresa Matthias scored a pair in the first minute of the second quarter, followed by a pair from Riley Roeder, as the Spartans went on an 8-0 run in the first 18 minutes of play. The Falcons went on to score four times over the next seven minutes to cut the deficit to five (9-4) with 5:16 left in the second. The tide turned back in York's favor as MacDonald won the last three draws of the quarter as she and Matthias accounted for three unanswered goals to end the half as York led 12-4.

York held Messiah scoreless on their first five possessions of the second half led by three saves by Garabo. Kiersten Blanchard and Logan Ward combined for two more Spartan goals to give the Green and White a 14-4 advantage with 6:14 left in the third. The Falcons would get one back, but Matthias scored with 1:25 left to give York a 10-goal advantage once again and force the game into running clock the rest of the way.

The two teams traded goals through the midway point of the fourth quarter as the Spartans maintained their 10-goal advantage, 17-7, with 6:18 left. York put the finishing touches on the blowout win by ending the game on a three-goal run with tallies by Kurland, Blanchard and Zoe Kluegel.

Up Next
The Spartans get back on the road and travel to No. 3 Salisbury on Saturday.

Notes
York improves to 7-7 all-time against Messiah, snapping a two-game skid against the Falcons … the Spartans have now won 10-straight conference games dating back to last season and are just one win away from tying the program record win streak … York held Messiah to season lows in goals (7), total shots (20) and ground balls (14) … Teresa Matthias' career-high six goals are the most by a Spartan this season … Christina Vendelis posted a career-best four caused turnovers which are the most by a Spartan this season … Chloe MacDonald matched her career-high with 11 draw controls as she has accomplished that feat twice this season.
