How It Happened
• The Mustangs got off to a great start with a three-run first inning. Stevenson collected four first inning hits including an Amani Jones RBI triple. It could have been worse but a caught stealing earlier in the inning prevented the inning from being a bigger one.
• York tied the game in the bottom of the second as
Andrew Santarpia doubled to lead off the inning. Back to back walks to
Brendan Martin and
Michael Tinneny loaded the bases.
Chris Betler then had a pop up that landed in shallow right by the line. Tinneny got thrown out at second for a fielder's choice but Santarpia scored to get York on the board.
Brian Jakubek scored Martin with a sacrifice fly and
Robby Elzinga scored Betler with a two-out single.
• The Spartans tacked on three more in the third. The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs. The Mustangs went to the bullpen and reliever Patrick O'Farrell got the next two Spartans to pop up as it looked like York was going to waste a golden opportunity. However, Betler ripped a bases clearing double to put York up 6-3.
• York tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth as
Austin Denlinger doubled with one out. He came around to score when
Jack Barry blasted an opposite field home run to left to push the York lead to 8-3.
• The Mustangs got those two runs back in the top of the fifth. Jonathan Brandt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Tommy Holcomb had a sacrifice fly to trim York's lead to 8-5. Stevenson trimmed the Spartan lead by another run in the top of the eighth on a Trevor Smooth RBI double down the left field line.
• The Spartans got a pair of huge insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jakubek was hit by a pitch to kick off the inning. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on an Elzinga sacrifice bunt. Denlinger then plated Jakubek with a double to right center. He moved to third on a Barry ground out and he scored on a wild pitch.
• It got a little crazy for the Spartans in the top of the ninth as a walk and two wild pitches opened the inning. A third hit by pitch pushed across Stevenson's seven run of the game. After a strikeout, Jones plated the Mustangs eighth run of the game with a single. Reliever
Ryan Kulick got the final two outs of the game as he coaxed Brandon Perillo into a double play where second baseman
Joe Capobianco was able to tag the runner from first before completing the twin killing to close out the win.
