Softball Splits with Mount Union, Cornell in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - York softball went 1-1 on day three of competition of their Florida trip with a 7-6 loss to Mount Union and 8-2 win over Cornell.

Elle Meyer led the Spartans with a combined 4-for-8 performance at the plate with a pair of runs scored from her lead-off spot. Emma Wade led the team with three RBI in a 3-for-8 effort.

How It Happened
York moved out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Emma Wade doubled down the left field line as Elle Meyer and Alyssa Harhigh came around to score. 

The Purple Raiders answered back in the bottom of the first with an Adri George RBI double. Mount Union then went ahead when Alyssa Rose doubled down the left field and two runs came in to score as the Raiders took a 3-2 lead.

A Spartan error led to a run for Mount Union in the second inning. The Raiders then increased their lead to 7-2 later in the inning with a Hanna Ingram three-run home run.

York began to chip away and put runs on the board in the third and fourth innings.

Harhigh got the rally started as her double, combined with a Raider error, scored Meyer in the third. Harhigh then came home on a Daphney Adams double. Then Adams came around to score on a Wade double.

Adams then cut the deficit to one, 7-6, with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Hannah Vogt weathered the early storm put on by the Raiders and went on to toss four scoreless innings while scattering just three hits.

How It Happened
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Morgan Sauers reached on an error by Cornell's second baseman which allowed Kiley Barnhart and Emma Keller to come around to score. The Sparans gave one back in the bottom of the second, but maintained a 2-1 lead.

Alyssa Harhigh extended the lead with an RBI ground out in the fourth. The Rams caught a break on a Spartan error in the bottom of the fourth, but the damage was limited to just one run as two runners were left stranded.

Taylor Lindsay shutout the Rams in the final three innings, allowing just three more hits during that span.

After a Taylor Coon two-run double in the fifth, the offense added even more insurance with a three-run outburst in the seventh. Lindsay helped her own cause with a two-RBI single to right and Emma Keller also singled to right to bring in Kaela Fritz.

Up Next
York has two games slated for tomorrow, beginning with Emmanuel at 10 a.m. followed by Saint Benedict at 12:30 p.m.
