#15 Lynchburg Edges York, 8-6, to Take Game Two

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The York baseball team dropped a close, 8-6, game two at No. 15 Lynchburg on Saturday as the Hornets clinched the series win.

The Spartans and Hornets had a back-and-forth battle going all day as neither side held more than a three-run lead at any point. York had a chance at a ninth-inning comeback with the top of the order coming, but Lynchburg pitcher Gavin Thurman recorded three-straight strikeouts on York's 1-2-3 hitters to preserve the win.

Jack Barry (2-for-5) and Austin Denlinger (2-for-6) led York with two hits and two RBI each on the day. Barry and Denlinger each recorded their first home run of the season, following a year when each ranked among the nation's best in long ball.

How It Happened
York jumped on Lynchburg in the top of the first and owned a 2-0 lead after one half inning of play courtesy of a Jack Barry two-run homer. The lead did not last long as Avery Neaves one-upped Barry with a three-run shot to give the Hornets a 3-2 edge at the end of one.

The Spartans benefitted from the long ball again in the third as Austin Denlinger poked a solo shot to tie the score, 3-3. Once again, Lynchburg rallied back in the bottom of the frame with two runs on one hit and took advantage of two costly Spartan errors.

Joey Ricciardi pulled York back within one, 5-4, in the fifth as he grounded out second, but drove in Joe Capobianco from third. Yet again, the Hornets responded in the bottom half, this time with two runs on two hits to extend the lead to 7-4.

An RBI-double by Denlinger, followed by a bases-loaded walk by Brendan Martin got York within one, 7-6, in the sixth. The Spartans then worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half of the frame to remain within one heading to the seventh.

York would be held scoreless through the final three innings. Lynchburg held York's top three hitters in the lineup to a combined 0-for-6 with five strikeouts during that span and worked out of a jam in the eight as the Spartans had runners on second and third.
