Spartans Drop Another Close Battle at #15 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - For the second day in a row, York baseball dropped another close decision to #15 Lynchburg, this time by a score of 9-8 as the Hornets swept the three-game series on their home field.

How It Happened
Austin Denlinger put the Spartans on top early, but briefly as he drove in Robby Elzinga with a double to right in the top of the first. York had a chance to add more, but Lynchburg's Brandon Pond forced a double play and a strikeout to escape the inning. The Hornets then hung four on the board in the bottom of the frame as Garrett Jackson drove in Cameron Lane with an opposite-field homer. Later in the inning, PJ Alvanos brought Avery Neaves and Gavin Collins home with a single.

The two sides traded runs through the third, fourth and fifth, with Lynchburg coming out on top, 5-3. Joe Capobianco drove in Elzinga with a single in the third, and Elzinga scored a gain in the fifth on an error by Pond.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lynchburg exploded for its second four-run inning of the day. Ryan Long led things off with a walk. Carrson Atkins, Lane, and Jackson kept things rolling with RBIs in three-straight plate appearances. Alvanos drove in the fourth run of the inning with a double and put Lynchburg up 9-3.

York got a run back in the seventh as Denlinger drove in Elzinga with a double for the second time on the day.

The Spartans erupted with four runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Andrew Santarpia reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Brian Jakubek to score from third, and an error at second base brought a hustling Davaughn Reid around from second to score as well. With two outs, York tacked one two more runs. Santarpia scored from second on a single by Elzinga combined with a Lynchburg error in right field. Elzinga then scored on an error by the Hornet shortstop.

York had late life in the ninth as Brendan Martin reached on a strikeout wild pitch and then later advanced to second on another wild pitch. With the tying run on second, Gavin Thurman buckled down and recorded his fourth strikeout of the inning to close the book on the Spartans.
