#13 Spartans Roll Past Alvernia in Commonwealth Opener

Madison Kurland led the offense with a career-high six-point performance

YORK, Pa. - The No. 13 York women's lacrosse team opened Commonwealth play Wednesday night at home with a season-high tying 18 goals in an 18-4 drubbing of Alvernia.

York ripped off 15 unanswered goals to start the game and reached a 10-goal advantage with 11:13 left in the second quarter before Alvernia got on the board with 10:11 remaining in the third. Madison Kurland had the hot hand for the Spartan offense as she racked up a career-high six points on a career-best five goals to lead all players on the night.

How It Happened
The Spartans put up staggering numbers in the first quarter as they led 8-0 and owned a 19-2 margin in total shots through the first 15 minutes of play. Madison Kurland scored a hat trick to lead the offense in the opening period. Kiersten Blanchard also found the back of the net multiple times with a pair of tallies.

The York scoring bonanza continued into the second quarter as the Spartans out-scored the Golden Wolves 6-0 with a 13-2 shot advantage. Celly Arthur set up Mia Alvarez for a goal with 11:13 left in the quarter to force the game into a running clock as York led 10-0. Kurland added two more tallies in the period as she reached her career-best total before the first half concluded.

The Spartans led 14-0 at halftime with a 32-4 shot advantage and an 11-5 advantage in draw controls. Bella Garabo exited the game at halftime with four saves and turned in her first shutout start of her career.

York and Alvernia went back-and-forth in the third quarter with two goals apiece as Teresea Matthias and Natalie Neiman did the scoring for York.

Nesiah Bertram and Emmy Bryden bookended the goal scoring in the fourth quarter as Alvernia scored twice in the middle. Alvernia's Erika Whitmoyer found the back of the net in the period for the second time on the night and for the 40th time on the season.

The Spartans hit the road for two-straight conference games, beginning with a trip to Eastern on Saturday for a 1 p.m. first draw.

York improves to 4-0 all-time against Alvernia … the Spartans matched their season-highs for points (24), goals (18) and caused turnovers (10) … Nesiah Bertram, Emmy Bryden and Natalie Neiman all scored their first-career goal for the Green and White on the night … Bryden also set a career-high with three caused turnovers on the night.
