#6 Spartans Stifle Blue Jays in Sunday Tilt

YORK, Pa. - A dominating start fueled a 17-6 victory for the No. 6 York men's lacrosse team over Elizabethtown on a frigid Sunday at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans smothered the Blue Jays out of the gates with a 4-0 first quarter advantage which turned into a 10-1 halftime lead. York also shut out Etown in the third quarter to extend the lead to 13-1, which ensured a victory for the Spartans.

Ryan Kennedy led a stellar Spartan defensive effort with a season-high tying five caused turnovers and matched Ethan Greene for the game-high with seven ground balls. Will Harnick led York with four goals as he and Ben Mayer tied Owen Yake for the game's point lead with four each. Dylan Wolf led all players with a season-high three assists.

How It Happened
York scored on its opening possession and ripped off seven unanswered in the first 19 minutes of the game. Eric Ranck and Will Harnick each tallied a pair during that span, while Zach Mentzer also joined the goal parade with his first-career tally.

Etown's Owen Yake broke up the shutout just over five minutes into the second quarter. The Blue Jays caused a turnover near midfield following a face-off which allowed the Jays to suddenly set up their offense and it paid off as Micah Ballew found Yake for their first tally.

York responded with three more goals over the next six-and-a-half minutes, including two more by Harnick, as the lead swelled to 10-1 at halftime. Vinny Facciponti kept the momentum on York's side throughout the first half as he won nine of 11 face-offs, including a 6-for-7 effort in the second quarter alone. Greene picked up five ground balls to help the Spartans gain possession off the draw.

Elizabethtown had more opportunities in the third, but failed to capitalize. The Blue Jays owned a 3-1 edge in face-offs and a 9-8 shot advantage, but only put two of those shots on target as York prevented the Jays from getting many clean looks. The Spartans made the margins even thinner for Etown as they won the ground ball battle, 9-4, in the third quarter with Brent Blackmon leading the way with four in the period.

Jacob Wilhelm, Jarrod Marenger, Michael Russo and face-off specialist Hugo Spencer each found the back of the net for York in the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays racked up five tallies in the period, led by Yake's hat trick.
