W&L Prevails, 12-7, in Top-25 Battle with York

YORK, Pa. - A late four-goal run by No. 3 Washington & Lee clinched a 12-7 road victory over No. 11 York on Saturday at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans battled back from a three-goal deficit at halftime to pull within one goal of the lead with 5:32 left in the third quarter. The Generals would go on to score four unanswered goals late in the third to midway through the fourth, which ultimately sealed the deal as W&L led 11-6 with 7:37 left.

How It Happened
The Spartans came out of the gates strong. Chloe MacDonald grabbed the opening draw and hit a cutting Riley Roeder who found the back of the net to give York the lead 20 seconds into the game. The Spartans had chances to tack on more early in the opening quarter, but General netminder Caroline Kranich came up with a pair of saves and one again midway through the period to minimize the damage.

W&L capitalized on Kranich's efforts and put a pair of goals on the board to edge out a 2-1 lead. However, the Spartans won the draw following the second General goal and Logan Ward fed a pass to Madison Kurland who beat Kranich for the tying goal, 2-2. Spartan goalie Bella Garabo came up with two saves in the three minutes of first quarter to preserve the tie.

The Generals had the jump to start the second quarter, scoring on the opening possession and adding another in the first two minutes of play to take a 4-2 lead. W&L tacked on a third with 8:16 left, but Teresa Matthias scored twice, including a free-position goal on the woman-advantage, as York trailed, 5-4, with 2:28 left in the half. The Spartan momentum was quickly wiped out as the Generals put two goals on the board in the final two minutes to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.

The Ward-Matthias connection worked two more times in the third quarter with the second resulting in a goal with 5:32 left to cut the W&L lead to one (7-6). The Spartans dominated possession through the first 10 minutes of the third, but the Generals won the last three draws of the period and scored twice during that span.

W&L found continued success on the draw, winning two of the first three to start the fourth, and made the most of their opportunities. The Generals scored two more unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-5 advantage with 7:37 left, which proved to be enough as the Spartans scored just one more time the rest of the way.
