Baseball Suffers Walk Off Loss at Abington

Joe Capobianco hits his team-leading fourth homer of the year in the game

JENKINTOWN, PA – The York College Spartans suffered a 6-5 walk-off loss at Penn State Abington in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Jenkintown, PA. The Spartans have now lost two straight and three of their last four to fall below .500 for the year.

How It Happened
• The Lions opened the scoring in the second inning as Sean Doherty doubled to right center. He moved to third on an Anthony Bencardino single and scored on a Andrew Lastowka sacrifice fly.
• Abington added another run in the second as Chase Swain singled to left, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a Ryan McCarty sacrifice fly to center for the 2-0 lead.
• York got a single run back in the fifth as Brendan Martin walked, moved to second on an error and to third on a Garrett Kile bunt single. Martin came around to score when Brian Jakubek hit into a double play. The Lions responded in the bottom of the inning as Swain led off the inning with a homer to center. Abington eventually got another sacrifice fly from Tim Petrucelli to make it 4-1.
• York got one run back in the sixth as Austin Denlinger tripled to lead off the inning. He came around to score on a Jack Barry sacrifice fly to left as York trailed 4-2. The Lions pushed the lead to 5-2 in the seventh Ryan McCarty launched a solo home run to center.
• The Spartans tied the game in the top of the eighth courtesy of a three-run bomb by senior Joe Capobianco. Robby Elzinga and Barry reached in front of Capobianco to tie the contest at five.
• The Lions got the game winner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Petrucelli doubled to left and then came around to score when Doherty dumped a single into left, scoring Petrucelli with the decisive run.

The game is the first meeting between the two programs … the Spartan offense had it's highest output in their last four games with the five runs … York has averaged just 2.8 runs over their last four games after averaging 9.8 runs over their first 11 games of the year … the Spartans tied a season-high with two sacrifice flies in the game … the Spartans are hitting .178 (23-for-129) in their last four games … York surrendered 14 hits, tied for their second highest total of the season in the loss … for the first time this year, the Spartan pitching staff did not surrender a walk … senior Joe Capobianco leads the team in homers with four while he took over the lead in RBI with 17 in the game … Capobianco leads the team in slugging percentage (.759) and OPS (1.259) while he has also drawn a team-best 10 walks.
 
Up Next
The Spartans return to Jaquet Field for a three-game home stand starting with a Saturday doubleheader against St. John Fisher. Game one is set for a 12:00 pm. This will be the first game between the two programs since March 20, 2005.
