Big Second Half Propels #3 Middlebury Past #11 York

Celly Arthur becomes York's all-time assist leader

YORK, Pa. - The No. 11 York women's lacrosse team felt the momentum slip away in the third quarter as No. 3 Middlebury pulled away to a 11-5 victory on Tuesday at Kinsley Field.

After a competitive first half, the Panthers stretched a one-goal halftime lead into a 9-3 advantage with a 4-0 third quarter run. Middlebury put further distance between York with three more unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter as the Spartans failed to score on 10-straight possessions to start the second half.

Celly Arthur had a historical performance as her second assist of the game established the program's new career assist record as she now has 93 career helpers.

Team Records
#3 Middlebury 5-0
#11 York 4-3

How It Happened
The Panthers missed their target on a pair of free-position shots early in the first quarter before finding the back of the net on their third at the 11:04 mark. The Panthers scored again on a free-position opportunity a minute later to take a 2-0 advantage less than five minutes in.

York went on to hold Middlebury scoreless on their final five possessions of the quarter while the Spartans scored a crucial goal in the final minute. Mia Alvarez dished off to a cutting Logan Ward who zipped a shot past Annie Enrietto for her tenth tally of the season and lifted her team's deficit in half.

The Spartans kept the momentum going into the second. York went on the woman-up advantage early in the second and capitalized on the opportunity as Riley Roeder finished off a pass from Celly Arthur. York went right back to work offensively after Chloe MacDonald won the ensuing draw control, Arthur found Alvarez 32 seconds later for the go-ahead goal.

The Panthers did not trail for long as they gained possession on the ensuing draw following York's go-ahead tally and tallied the equalizer on that possession with 11:20 left in the second quarter. Middlebury remained on the hunt for more, but came up empty on four-straight possessions and missed the mark on seven-straight shots. Eventually Lily Riseberg scooped up a rebound from a Bella Garabo save and Anna Spehr slipped a shot past Garabo for the go-ahead goal with 3:14 left in the second.

Middlebury dominated the third quarter with a 4-0 run and set the tone early with a pair of goals 21 seconds apart in the first three minutes of the quarter. The Panthers held York to just two shots in the period while the Spartans struggled to stop the bleeding by turning the ball over seven times.

Middlebury put two more tallies on the board in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and added one more midway through the period to take a 11-3 lead. York managed to get back on the board as Kiersten Blanchard finished on a free-position opportunity and Anya Litofsky finished in transition on a beautiful feed from Sarah Christensen.

Up Next
The Spartans remain at home and will face No. Washington & Lee on Saturday at noon.
