#18 Spartans Look Strong in Season-Opening Win at Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The No. 18 York women's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a 15-7 victory on the road Wednesday afternoon at Washington (Md.).

The Spartans scored six unanswered goals in the final 6:04 of the game to stretch a 9-7 lead into a 15-7 runaway victory. Chloe MacDonald accounted for three of those final six goals as she led all goal scorers with a career-high tying five tallies on the day.

#18/14 York 1-0
RV/NR Washington 1-1

How It Happened
The Spartans scored the game's first two tallies in a span of just 40 seconds to take a 2-0 lead less than four minutes after the opening draw. Madison Kurland tallied the first goal of the season for York, followed by Chloe MacDonald and later Jen Campbell as the Spartans owned a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play.

The Shorewomen countered with a pair of quick goals 41 seconds apart early in the second to knot the score up at 3-3. The Spartans answered less than a minute later with another Kurland tally and then again 1:16 later with another MacDonald goal on the extra-woman advantage. Kiersten Blanchard delivered a crushing blow just before halftime as she tallied a goal with just 48 seconds left to give the Spartans a 6-3 advantage heading into the break.

Washington would trim the Spartan lead to two goals less than three minutes into the third quarter, but the Spartans would tally three-straight goals in the final 5:27 of the quarter before the Shorewomen got one back with 27 seconds left. Blanchard came up big on that three goal run as she scored twice and assisted on the other. The Spartans also won five of six draw controls in the third while the Shorewomen committed four turnovers in the frame.

The Shorewomen once again cut the deficit to two as they scored back-to-back goals and won the first three draws to start the third. A turnover on Washington's ensuing possession following the second goal proved extra costly as it directly led to a goal on the other end and sparked a six-goal by York to end the game. The Spartans went on to win the final six draws of the game with Jenna Cholowinski winning three of them during that span.

Up Next
The Spartans return the field on Tuesday as they make their home debut in the annual non-conference showdown with #6/5 Franklin & Marshall.
