Spartans Use Second Half Surge in 55-35 Victory at Hood

Spartans out-score Blazers 30-7 in final 17 minutes

FREDERICK, Md. - The York women's basketball team used a late third-quarter surge to set the table for a runaway 55-35 victory at Hood on Wednesday night to remain undefeated on the road this season.

A 10-1 Spartan run to end the third quarter busted open a one-point ball game and the Spartans never took their foot off the gas from then on. Savannah Wilson powered the third-quarter rally as she scored nine of her 14 points in the third. Wilson would end up in a three-tie for the team scoring with Kayla Ferris and Bradi Zumbrum.

York out-scored Hood 30-7 in the final 17 minutes, including a 13-0 run to end the game that covered the last 5:49 of the fourth quarter. The Spartans limited the Blazers to just eight field goal attempts (3-for-8) in the final 17 minutes of the game as Hood committed 18 turnovers and York collected 14 steals during that span.

How It Happened
The Blazers ended the first quarter with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to take a 14-10 lead after a rather even first 10 minutes of basketball.

Savannah Wilson knocked down a three on the opening possession of the second quarter to cut the deficit to one, 14-13, but York scored just four more points over the next four minutes and trailed 20-17 at the midway point of the quarter. Kayla Ferris started to heat up later in the quarter and gave the Spartans their first lead of the second, 21-20, with 2:36 left.

York clung to its one-point lead into the closing seconds of the half, but Hood's Kayla Watkins-Harvey hauled in an offensive rebound and put back the layup to end a five-and-a-half minute scoreless drought and give her team the halftime lead.

Wilson opened the third quarter with another three-pointer as the Spartans regained the lead, 24-22, on their opening possession. York went on to score just one point over the next three minutes until Wilson knocked down another three and evened up the score, 28-28, with 5:45 left in the third.

A Ferris steal and layup at 2:52 gave York its largest lead of the night to that point with a 34-30 advantage. Taylor Burda quickly extended the lead to seven with a three-pointer on the ensuing Spartan possession and added a free throw two possessions later to swell the lead to eight with 1:08 left in the third.

The Spartans dominated the second half of the third quarter on both ends of the floor. York forced eight Hood turnovers in the final five minutes of play as the Spartans compiled six steals and out-scored the Blazers 10-1 during that span. Wilson led the way with nine points in the third, including the team's first nine of the quarter, as she was the catalyst in turning the tide in York's favor the rest of the way.

York opened up its first double-digit lead of the game (42-31) on a Ferris layup just under three minutes into the fourth quarter as the Spartans opened the period on a 4-0 run. Brooklyn Naylor collected a steal and then scored the layup on the other end for her first bucket of the night to give the Spartans an 11-point lead with 4:24 left. Bradi Zumbrum followed suit with a steal and bucket of her own on the very next possession and knocked down her free throw to convert the three-point play. Zumbrum then put the final icing on the cake with a three-pointer in the closing seconds to move herself into a three-way tie with Ferris and Wilson for the team lead with 14 points.
