Memorable Night for Women's Basketball Culminates in Comeback Win at Albright

Kayla Ferris records her 1,000th career point and head coach Betsy Witman earns her 400th victory

READING, Pa. - The York women's basketball team erased a six-point fourth-quarter deficit and earned a historic program victory, 57-54, at Albright on Tuesday night to improve to 10-0 on the road this season.

Two major program milestones were achieved on the night as Kayla Ferris became the 17th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club and head coach Betsy Witman notched career victory No. 400 in her 25th season at the helm of the Spartan program.

Needing just 10 points to reach the milestone entering the night, Ferris came out hot, making three of her first four field goal attempts and added a free throw to get to seven points at the end of the first quarter. Ferris would be held at seven until four minutes into the fourth quarter when she knocked down a runner from a harsh angle on the left side of the lane. Ferris then drove the lane again and laid in the necessary bucket to get her over the 1,000-point mark and cut the Spartan deficit to two, 52-50, with 3:23 left.

Ferris continued to add to her historic night as she went on to drain a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to give the Spartans a 55-54 lead, and ultimately clinch the come-from-behind victory. Her second free throw marked just the second lead change of the second half as the Spartans trailed since Albright took the lead 2:44 into the third quarter.

Witman is in the midst of her 25th season as head coach of the York women's basketball program since taking over for the start of 1997-98 season. She now owns a record of 400-246, which is good for a win percentage of .619.

She is the fourth head coach in York women's basketball history and Witman became the program's all-time leader in wins when she notched her 111th victory on January 29, 2005 in a 79-76 triumph at Salisbury. She currently ranks 36th in the nation among active NCAA Division III women's basketball coaches in victories.

How It Happened
The Spartans went down six (50-46) with 6:37 left to play in the fourth, but a Ferris jumper on the ensuing York possession Sparked a 13-4 Spartan run to end the game. Ferris led all players with six points during that span, including the crucial go-ahead free throws with eight seconds left. Savannah Wilson had a clutch three-pointer on that run with 2:44 left as she gave York its first lead of the second half since three minutes into the third quarter.

Led by Ferris' seven points, the Spartans rushed out to a 16-8 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter as York shot a staggering 7-for-9 from the floor during that stretch. Suddenly, the Lions came roaring back and tied the game up, 16-16, at the end of the first period of play as they limited York to just one field goal attempt in the final three minutes.

Albright moved out to a seven-point lead near the midway point of the second quarter, but York ended the quarter on a 9-0 run which lasted 5:54. Four different Spartans scored during that span, led by Meghan Carlson's trio of points as she converted a three-point play from the free throw line to begin the run.

Albright took a 5-0 run into the final 30 seconds of the third quarter to take a five point lead. The Lion momentum was broken up by a Tori Geitner three with 10 seconds left in the third that cut the Spartan deficit to two points. and gave York the lift it needed for the fourth-quarter comeback.
