A Trio of Spartans Place at Messiah Open

GRANTHAM, Pa. - A trio of Spartans landed on the podium Saturday as York wrestling made its annual appearance at the Messiah Open.

Blake Shalbert led the team with a second-place finish at 141 pounds, while Bryan Diaz placed fifth at 141 and Wilfred Jimenez claimed sixth at 125. 

Shalbert made his return to the mat in nearly a month and finished the day 2-1 with a finals appearance at 141. The Spartan senior began his day with a first-period fall (2:27) over Payton Jackson (Messiah) and advanced to the finals on an injury default victory. Shalbert squared off against Kenny Duschek (Columbia) in the title bout and lost by a narrow 6-2 margin.

Diaz began his day with a  loss to Asa Brunk (Messiah), but rallied back with a 17-1 victory over teammate Ian Shaubach and a 11-6 win over Mason Casey (Messiah). Diaz lost in the consolation semifinals to Liberty's Garrett Good before receiving an injury default victory against Patrick Schellpfeffer (George Mason) in the fifth-place bout.

Jimenez went 1-1 to start the day with a victory over Andrew Finateri (Stevens) followed by a loss to Kevin Lopez (Nassau CC). The Spartan sophomore went to post back-to-back wins against Bryce Arnold (Messiah) and Tristian Walls (Liberty) to get into the consolation semifinals where he suffered a 9-3 loss to Sean Seefeldt. Jimenez closed out his day with a narrow, 3-2, loss to Brian McCaw (Muhlenberg) in the 125-pound fifth-place match.

A few other Spartans also went deep into their respective brackets as Colman Ermi went 2-2 at 133 and Alan Choback compiled a 2-2 record at 157.

The Spartans travel to Bloomsburg tomorrow to take on the Huskies in an inter-divisional dual starting at approximately 2:30 p.m.
