Spartan Second Half Comeback Falls Short Against Alvernia

YORK, Pa. - A late surge in a big second-half comeback effort fell short for the York men's basketball team in a 63-58 loss to Alvernia at home Wednesday night in a MAC commonwealth contest.

After trailing by nine or more points since the midway point of the first half, the Spartans used an 11-0 run beginning with 6:05 left in the second to cut the deficit to just four with 3:13 left to play. York's hopes at a miraculous comeback faded suddenly as the Spartans scored on just one more possession the rest of the way as Alvernia escaped with their second-straight conference road win of the season. The Spartans showed great resilience as they rallied back from a 14-point halftime deficit to out-score the Golden Wolves, 34-25, in the second half.

Team Records
Alvernia 6-2 (2-1 MACC)
York 2-6 (0-4 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Golden Wolves had the upper hand right out of the gates and opened up a 22-12 lead through the first 10 minutes of play on a 9-for-18 performance from the field. Jalil Schenck led AU with seven points during that span, including a pair of three's, as Alvernia shot 3-for-6 from beyond the arc to open the game. York was hampered by a 5-for-17 effort from the field to start the game, including a 1-for-7 performance from three-point range.
  • Alvernia's pace slowed slightly over the final 10 minutes of the first half as they attempted eight less field goals and scored 16 points on a 6-for-10 effort from the field. Kai Cipalla and Jayden Rowe combined for nine of York's 12 points during that span to lead the way for the Green and White. Cipalla finished with nine first-half points on a 4-for-6 shooting performance to lead York. The Golden Wolves took a double-digit lead into the break as they owned a 9-2 margin in second-chance points with a dominant 25-12 rebounding advantage.
  • York gained some traction out of halftime and converted on four of their first five field attempts of the half. Less than eight minutes into the half, a pair of Tate Landis free throws cut the deficit briefly back down to single digits (49-40) as York managed to hang around. However, over the next four minutes, AU used an 11-5 run to open up a 15-point lead with 7:03 left to play.
  • The tables turned suddenly when Alvernia came up empty on six-straight possessions and the Spartans ripped off 11 unanswered points as they trailed 60-56 with 3:13 left in the second half. York went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field with Landis and Chris Miers combining for nine of the team's points.
  • Neither team managed to score a point over the next 2:27 until a Malik Green free throw broke the drought with 0:45 left to give Alvernia a 51-46 lead. A Miers layup with 28 seconds left gave the Spartans hope as they trailed by three, but York failed to get the critical bucket they desperately needed to down the stretch despite getting multiple cracks at it with the game still in reach.
  • Miers and Landis led all players in the second half with 10 points each as they duo combined to shoot 50% (7-for-14) from the field and a combined 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
