Spartans Advance Past Stevenson in MACC 4/5 Game

YORK, Pa. - The fourth-seed York men's soccer team advances to the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals following a 2-1 victory over fifth-seed Stevenson on Tuesday night at Graham Field in the MACC 4/5 Play-In Game.

The two sides traded first half tallies before Luke Nall netted the eventual game-winner in the 53rd minute off a rebounded Tyler Howlett shot.

How It Happened
  • York had the jump early and compiled a 3-0 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes. Their pressure eventually led to a Jack Mitzelfelt goal in the 21st minute. Tyler Howlett crossed the ball in from the right side and his pass hit the left post, bounced back into the middle right on the foot of Mitzelfelt who finished into the open net for his ninth tally of the season.
  • Stevenson responded with an equalizer in the 34th minute. Andy Portillo maneuvered his way up the left side and crossed a looping pass over to Joe Nicholson. Brady Bixler left his net to make a play on the pass, but could not get there in time as Nicholoson one-touched a shot between Bixler and Brandon Holy into the net for his fourth tally of the season.
  • Luke Nall and the Spartans answered with a tally in the 53rd minute to take a 2-1 advantage. Howlett beat a defender on the right wing and entered the box with a clean look on goal. He managed to get a pair of shots off, both saved by Kristian Slaby, and his second shot rebounded out to left where Nall was able to run on and tap it in for his seventh of the season.
  • The Spartans had a stretch between the 69th and 78th minutes where they had chances abound to tack on an insurance goal, but could not seem to get the breaks they needed. York generated three corners and three shots during that span. One of the best chances came in the 69th when a loose ball trickled out to the left slot where Shaun Apsley had a look at a half open net, but his shot found the left post instead. Stevenson keeper, Slaby, came up with one of the best saves of the night when he deflected a blistered shot by Matt Martin from the right wing in the 70th minute of play.

Up Next
