York's Season Concludes with MACC Semifinal Loss at Messiah

Leading scorer Jack Mitzelfelt tallies his 10th goal of the season in 6-1 defeat

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The fourth-seed York men's soccer team saw their five-game unbeaten streak and season come to a close Thursday night with a 6-1 loss to top-seed Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals at Shoemaker Field.

The No. 1 nationally-ranked Falcons set the tone early with a goal 1:45 into the contest, followed by two more unanswered tallies through the first 26 minutes of play as they rolled past York on their way to their 25th MAC Commonwealth Final appearance.

#1 (1) Messiah 18-0-1

How It Happened
  • Messiah wasted no time getting on the board as Ben Lefever sent it home in the second minute of play. Lefever entered the right side of the box, split multiple York defenders and slipped a shot inside the near post for his ninth tally of the season.
  • Messiah tallied a pair six minutes apart, beginning with a Trevor Swartz tally in the 20th minute. Schwartz was at the right place at the right time as he tapped in a Matt MacDonald rebound from close range on the left post.
  • MacDonald tacked on Messiah's third tally in the 26th minute on a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out. Rather than sending a shot on frame or playing the ball over the top, Messiah elected to play the ball short into the top of the box and flick a pass out to MacDonald who found a spot on the left side of the box. MacDonald beat a Spartan defender and arched a shot to the right corner for his 20th goal of the season.
  • York got one back in the 31st minute to break up the Messiah shutout. Luke Nall started the play as he passed ahead to Tyler Howlett up the right side. Howlett carried the ball to the end line and crossed a low pass to Jack Mitzelfelt on the doorstep who opened up his foot and redirected the ball into the net for his 10th tally of the year.
  • Brady Bixler was tested early and often throughout the first half as the Falcons put nine of their 17 shots on target in the opening period. Bixler made a number of nice saves, but none better than snaring a blistered shot by Lee Patrick from 20 yards out in the 43rd minute to hold the two-goal differential heading into halftime.
  • Messiah came flying out of the halftime break and put two more goals on the board within the first three minutes. MacDonald tallied his second of the night just 1:08 into the period as he slipped a shot into the left corner from a harsh angle on the right post. Less than two minutes later, Cole Christian opened up his right foot to knock in a one-timer on a cross from Lefever from the right.
  • Eight minutes later, the Falcons tacked on their sixth as Swartz crossed a pass in from the left to Josh Bratager who one-touched the pass into the net.
