Shorb Powers Spartans to Win at Alvernia

Senior Claire Shorb leads York to victory with career-high 22 kills

Box Score READING, Pa. - The Spartans closed out their MAC Commonwealth slate with a 3-1 victory at Alvernia on Thursday night. York took the first set, 26-24, and Alvernia responded with a 25-16 win in set number two, but the Spartans went to take the final two sets, 25-16 and 25-17.

Claire Shorb paced all players with 22 kills which established a new career-high for the Spartan senior playing her final week in a York jersey.

How It Happened
  • The first set saw just one lead change as the Spartans overcame a 10-point deficit to earn a 26-24 win. Nothing went York's way early as the Golden Wolves opened up with a 10-0 run off the opening serve. The Spartans slowly, but surely reeled Alvernia back in as they cut the deficit to 22-18. Claire Shorb racked up three big kills as the Spartans out-scored Alvernia eight of the final 10 points to clinch the comeback win.
  • After a neck-and-neck start, Alvernia pulled away to a 25-16 win in the second set. Shorb had four kills as the Spartans edged out an 8-7 lead, but that would be the last lead of the set for York. The Spartans ended up hitting .021 in the frame with seven attack errors while the Golden Wolves owned a 13-8 edge in kills.
  • The Spartans flipped the script in the third set as they rolled to a 25-16 win. Abby Diehl ripped off four-straight service aces as York jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and held the lead the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves managed to cut the deficit to three on multiple occasions, but the Spartans shut the door by taking nine of the final 12 points of the frame with six different Spartans recording kills during that span.
  • York broke open an even set late to rally to a 25-17 win in the fourth set to clinch the match. Morgan Nolte knotted the score, 13-13, with a kill and Diehl followed up with an ace on the ensuing serve which sparked a 12-4 run for York to close the set. Shorb punctuated the Spartan win by recording all four of the final points in the match as she finished with 22 kills.
