Spartans End Weekend with Losses to Nationally-Ranked Opponents

Rizzi earns Wid Guisler All-Tournament Team honors

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Spartans volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 losses to close out play at Juniata College's Wid Guisler Invitational on Saturday.

The Spartans fell 25-19-, 25-15, 25-13 to Carnegie Mellon in the first match of the day. Second-ranked Juniata defeated York 25-17, 25-11, 25-7 in the final match of the weekend.

Junior Megan Rizzi represented the Spartans on the all-tournament team as she led York with 36 kills on the weekend, including a 23-kill match against Smith. She also posted 15 digs on Friday night for her 11th double-double performance of the season.

Match One
Team Records
York 10-12
(RV) Carnegie Mellon 15-6

How It Happened
  • York held the upper hand through the midway point of the first set and a Morgan Nolte kill put the Spartans ahead, 14-11. That would prove to be the high water mark for the Spartans as five-straight York miscues led to 14-5 Tartan run to end the set.
  • A 5-0 CMU run fueled by a trio of York hitting errors gave the Tartans a 14-8 lead in the second set and ultimately sealed York's fate as CMU rolled to a 10-point win.
  • The Spartans struggled to gain traction early in the third set as CMU built up a 12-7 advantage on six kills. That lead quickly expanded to 11 with a 5-0 Tartan run which catapulted CMU to a 25-13 victory.
  • Megan Rizzi tied for the match with eight kills while Nolte led all players with four blocks.

Match Two
Team Records
York 10-13
#2 Juniata 23-1

How It Happened
  • The Eagles jumped on York with a 6-1 to open the match, but the Spartans pulled within one after three-straight Juniata hitting errors. Kills by Claire Shorb and Jennifer Taylor made it a 14-12 match in favor of Juniata as York continued to hang around. The Eagles eventually shut the door with a late five-point run which set them up for set point.
  • A Shorb kill cut the York deficiti to 10-7 in the second set, but that would be the closest the Spartans would come the rest of the way as Juniata went on a 15-4 run to end the set.
  • Juniata overran York in the third set as the Eagles racked up 19 points on eight kills while holding the Spartans to just three. Juniata went on to hold York to single digits in a convincing 25-7 win.
