OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's soccer team scored two goals in the last 21 minutes of the game to earn a 2-1 MAC Commonwealth road win at Stevenson on Wednesday night. York scored with 1:10 left in the game to steal the win from the Mustangs.
The victory snapped a two-game skid for the Spartans as they improve to 3-2-1 on the road. The Spartans are now 7-5-2 overall and 2-3 in the league while the Mustangs fall to 4-7-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
How It Happened
• The Mustangs had the better of the play for most of the first half. They capitalized early as Ryan Muroff found Tiago Silva who finished the chance for the 1-0 lead just 10:04 into the game. The Mustangs finished the half holding 14-2 edge in shots including a 6-0 margin in shots on goal.
Brady Bixler kept the Spartans in the game with five saves in the opening 45 minutes.
• The Spartan coaching staff made some halftime adjustments and the second 45 minutes proved to be much different for the visitors. There were far fewer opportunities for the Mustangs in the second half while the Spartans started to push the play into Stevenson's defensive third. That pressure finally paid off in the 70
th minute.
Mitchell Seipt carried the ball in from the right flank. He served the ball into
Matt Martin who played a simple lay off to
Luke Nall. Nall blasted a one-time left-footed shot into the upper 90 from about 14 yards out to tie the game. The goal was Nall's fifth of the season.
•
Jack Mitzelfelt fired off two shots within 43 seconds of each other. The first was saved and the second was high. Martin had a pair of good looks in the final ten minutes with the second one from close range. Martin more than made up for the misfire with 1:10 left in the game. Martin got possession midway between the box and midfield on the Spartans defensive half of the field. Martin outraced three Mustangs with the ball on his foot until he got into the box. The freshman showed great composure and flicked a pass to a wide open Mitzelfelt who trailed the play to the left of Martin. Mitzelfelt finished off the beautiful play with his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
• The Spartans killed off the final minute of the game as they picked up a critical conference win. York out shot Stevenson 9-4 in the second half including 5-1 in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 5-0 bulge in second half corner kicks. Bixler earned six saves in the win.
