Mustangs Tally Late to Spoil Spartan Victory

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A Mustang goal in the 87th minute spoiled a Spartan victory as the York women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at Stevenson.

York clung to a 1-0 lead after an Ashlynn Weger tally in the 15th minute, but the Mustangs hung around and eventually caught a break on a corner set piece with just three minutes left to play when Michelle Mesquita netted the equalizer. The Spartans owned a 23-5 shot advantage throughout the game with a 9-3 margin in shots on goal and a 9-3 edge in corners.

How It Happened
  • The field was severely tilted in York's favor throughout the first half and the Spartans took advantage with an Ashlynn Weger goal in the 15th minute. The long-developing play began with Ashley Hudak reversing field and sending a long looping pass that ended up in the possession of Anna Morton who drove to the end line left of the goal. Morton swung a pass into the box where Weger eventually gained possession. Weger had her initial shot blocked, but after collecting her own rebound she maneuvered to the right and ripped a shot to the upper right corner of the goal that ricocheted off iron a few times, but managed to cross the end line just enough to count as the game's first goal.
  • The Spartans had a great chance to tack on another in the 33rd minute, but the crossbar bailed the Mustangs out of falling behind by two. Julianna Schilling drove to the end line right up the right side and played a cross in that landed on the foot of Erin Snyder who put a shot off the crossbar. The rebound funneled out to the middle where Abby Brown had a chance to knock it in, but a Stevenson defender managed to get just enough of Brown's attempt to send the shot wide of the goal.
  • York survived a scare in the 50th minute when the Mustangs put together their first quality chance of the game. Kamille Purcell received a thru ball into the top of the box and managed to get a step on the Spartan back line. York managed to quickly recover as Moriah Morton shouldered Purcell off the ball just as Jacqueline Keogh arrived on the scene to corral the loose ball approximately 10 yards out from the open goal mouth.
  • Both sides had quality chances just minutes apart midway through the second half. First, it was the Spartans in the 64th minute when Moriah Morton played a long pass up the field nearly three-quarter length of the pitch to Makayla Harper who blew past her defender. Harper had a one-on-one with Mustang keeper Courtney Wysokowski, but the Spartan sent a shot wide to the right as Wysokowski left her end line and forced a rushed shot by Harper. Two minutes later, the Mustangs had a free kick opportunity from 32 yards out. Cassidy Butler ended up taking the shot for Stevenson and she sent a low liner hurling towards the net, but Keogh had a read on it the whole way and made the save.
  • As time ticked below five minutes left, both team's senses heightened with a one-goal differential glaring in their faces. The Spartans desperately tried to extend their cushion, but it was the Mustangs who seized one of their very few opportunities they had all night. Butler served a pass in from the left corner on a set play and found the head of Michelle Mesquita who rose up out of the crowd and directed the ball into the left side of the net for the game-tying goal with just over three minutes left.
