YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer squad celebrated senior day in style with a 3-1 MAC Commonwealth win over Alvernia University on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans scored three first half goals to seize command of the game and cruised from there.
The Spartans improve to 8-3-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the league. The Golden Wolves fall to 3-8-3 and 1-3 in the league.
How It Happened
• The Spartans got on the board in just the third minute of the game.
Sabrina McGuigan took a free kick near the far sideline from about 28 yards out. McGuigan's boot found the head of
Erin Snyder who flicked the header into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
• The Golden Wolves had a great chance of their own in the tenth minute as Gabriella Fontana hit a long shot that Spartan goalie
Jacqueline Keogh saved inside the left post. York had an opportunity in the 25
th minute as
Anna Morton struck a beautiful cross that just missed the head of an oncoming Spartan on the right side of the box.
• York added to the lead in the 37
th minute on a corner kick.
Keziah Boyce hit the corner from the right sideline. Her kick was redirected by
Ashley Hudak to
Ashlynn Weger who finished off the chance for her first goal of the season. The Spartans struck again 1:13 later as Hudak had a free kick from 30 yards out. Her kick found Snyder in the box and the senior flicked a pass to
Mackenzie D'Anthony who completed the play with her first collegiate goal.
• The Spartans out shot the Golden Wolves 9-2 in the first half while they held an 8-0 bulge in corner kicks.
• The Golden Wolves spoiled the shutout in the 59
th minute. Abigail Sargent played the ball in from the left wing. Her pass found Haley Dougherty who pivoted and put the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the year.
• The Spartans forced Alvernia goalie Brynn Bock to make a pair of saves over the final 20 minutes of the game as the Green and White settled for the two-goal win. York finished the game out shooting the Golden Wolves 17-7 including 8-3 in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 9-2 margin in corner kicks for the match.
