YORK, Pa. - The Spartan field hockey team fell, 3-2, in overtime in a nationally-ranked conference battle with Messiah on Wednesday at Kinsley Field.

Mallory Kline netted the game-winner for the Falcons 6:20 into overtime to cap off a two-goal performance for the Falcon forward.

Team Records
#10 Messiah 10-2 (5-0 MACC)
#14 York 9-4 (3-1 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Falcons threatened early with three shots on goal and a pair of corners in the first 10 minutes of play. Belle Fields bailed the Spartans out twice, including a sprawling save on a Mallory Kline shot from point-blank range, but Messiah finally broke through in the 10th minute when Kline entered the circle unmarked and ripped a shot to the lower right corner.
  • The Spartans answered back early in the second quarter as they caught the Falcons trying to get repositioned on an expiring green card. Katie Martino started the play as she carried the ball up the right side to the end line. From there, Martino whipped the ball in towards the cage where Hannah Huffman deflected it in on the right post.
  • With just over two minutes left in the first half, Messiah regained the lead following a string of corners. Ashlyn Smith netted the goal for the Falcons as she ripped a shot through traffic from the right slot that deflected off a Spartan stick and redirected around Fields into the cage.
  • The Spartans had the jump to start the third quarter and their work paid off in the 37th minute of play. Huffman drove in from the left wing and chipped a pass to the right through several Messiah defenders where Riley Buschert was waiting to knock the ball into the yawning net.
  • York produced an early corner with a shot on target to open the fourth quarter and after that early surge, the remainder of the period belonged to Messiah. The Falcons dominated possession and scoring chances as they owned a 4-1 advantage in corners and a 3-1 edge in shots, but Fields held strong for the Spartans with a trio of fourth-quarter saves.
  • Messiah gave all York it could handle to begin overtime as the two teams played six-on-six because both sides were serving cards. The Falcons put three shots on goal within the first two minutes, but all were turned away by the Spartan defense including defensive saves by Libby Wild and Sara Pique. The Spartans managed to briefly get the ball back into their offensive end and produce a corner, but after not capitalizing, Messiah countered with a barrage of five unanswered shots in a span of less than two minutes. Mallory Kline netted the game-winner as she found a soft spot on the left wing and sent it home after receiving a feed from Kelsey Heltzel from the point.

Notes
The Falcons have now won the last eight meetings with the Spartans … Messiah has not lost a regular season (or postseason) conference game since 2014 having won the last 51-straight regular season meetings against MAC Commonwealth teams … the three goals given up by York is the most in a game this season as the Spartans have only surrendered eight through 13 games … Libby Wild notched a pair of defensive saves which matches the program's single-game record as the Spartans posted a season-high three on the night … Belle Fields turned away a career-best 11 shots in her first-career double-digit save performance.
