Short-Handed Spartans Never Trail in Victory Over Stevenson

Savannah Wilson Led All Players with Career-high 23 Points

YORK, Pa. - Playing without four players, including a pair of starters, the York women's basketball team never trailed in a gutsy 58-52 MAC Commonwealth home victory over Stevenson to open play in the new year.

Savannah Wilson led all scorers with a career-high 23 points and iced the game with a pair of made free throws followed by a made three-pointer in a span of 31 seconds to give her team a nine-point lead with 18 seconds left.

Team Records
Stevenson 4-8 (2-3 MACC)
York 11-2 (5-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Spartans held the Mustangs scoreless through the first four minutes of play as a Morgan DeBeary three-pointer broke the Stevenson scoring drought. York owned a 10-3 lead at the midway point of the opening quarter led by Savannah Wilson's five points. The Spartans maintained a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter, leading 19-12, as both teams scored nine points each in the final five minutes. Stevenson's Trisha Tellian led all players with eight points during that stretch.
  • The Mustangs opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run, building off a 6-0 run to end the first, as they cut the deficit to two, 19-17, with 7:14 left in the second. The Spartans would go to hold Stevenson scoreless for the next three minutes as York built up a 23-17 advantage. Both teams would go on to make just two more field goals each in the final four minutes, but the Mustangs made both of theirs from beyond the arc to hold York to a 27-23 halftime lead. Stevenson finished the first half with six of their seven total made field goals from three-point range.
  • The Mustangs cut the deficit to one, 27-26, in the opening minute of the third quarter, but the Spartans stopped Stevenson on the next four possessions while York opened up a 32-26 lead with just over seven minutes left. A back-and-forth battle ensued over the next three minutes before York managed to open up a nine-point lead late into the quarter after getting a few defensive stops. The Mustangs would not go away quietly as they knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to six, 41-35, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Taylor Burda knocked down a clutch three-pointer to swell the Spartan lead back to nine, 45-36, with 7:03 left to play in the fourth. Kayla Ferris recorded her fifth steal of the night on the ensuing Mustang possession and then knocked down a pair of free throws to push York ahead by 11 with 6:35 to play. However, the Mustangs fought their way back as they out-scored York 11-4 over the next five minutes to cut the Spartan lead to four with 1:25 left. York turned Stevenson over with 49 seconds left and Stevenson's Oliva Coleman was charged with a technical foul. Wilson knocked down both free throws as she reached 20 points on the night and then put the game out of reach with a three-pointer on the ensuing Spartan possession to put her team up nine, 56-47, with 18 seconds left.
