Spartans Roll Past Hood to Sixth-Straight Conference Win

Ferris and Zumbrum each post double-double performances

YORK, Pa. - The York women's basketball team out-scored Hood by 24 points in the second half in a runaway 77-38 MAC Commonwealth victory Wednesday night at Wolf Gym to remain undefeated in conference play.

Team Records
Hood 5-8 (2-4 MACC)
York 12-2 (6-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Hood owned an early 6-5 edge as the Blazers went 2-for-2 from three-point range. The Blazer lead was short lived as Spartans went on 13-0 run to take an 18-6 lead with 2:16 left in the opening quarter. Alana Bortner led all scorers with nine points at quarter's end, including six on York's double-digit run. Kayla Ferris hauled in five boards in the first quarter to lead all players.
  • York and Hood struggled to find rhythms as the second quarter unfolded with the two teams shooting a combined 2-for-10 from the floor. A Savannah Wilson steal, one of five for her in the first half, led to a fast break layup for Bradi Zumbrum on the other end with 6:25 left as the Saprtans snapped out of their funk by scoring on three of their next four possessions to take a 29-16 lead. The Blazers came back to cut the deficit to eight with just four minutes left to play, but the final four minutes were dominated by the Spartans. York finished the quarter on an 11-4 run, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, while limiting Hood to a 1-for-4 performance during that span.
  • Ferris led the way for York down the stretch as she poured in seven points during the final four minutes of the first half. Ferris and Bortner led the way with 11 points each, while Ferris also led all players with eight rebounds and Brooklyn Naylor hauled in a career-high tying seven rebounds.
  • The Spartans turned the ball over three times on the first four possessions to open the third quarter and scored just once on their first five possessions. Then with 5:59 left, Bortner scored a layup to start a string of four-straight possessions with points and the Spartans ended the quarter out-scoring the Blazers  14-4. Hood turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter alone with Ferris accounting for half of those turnovers with four steals.
  • York rushed out to a 32-point lead on a 9-3 run to open the fourth, led by Alyssa Hocker's five points as she established a new career-high with nine points for the game with 7:03 left. The Spartans went on to surrender just one more field goal the rest of the way with the Blazers shooting 1-for-7 from the field. Taylor Brenneman and Briaunna Embrey-Banks came off the bench to combine for five of York's 11 points down the closing stretch as York out-scored Hood 18-5 in the final quarter.
