YORK, Pa. - The York women's basketball got back in the win column and completed the regular season sweep of Alvernia with a 62-53 Commonwealth victory at home on Saturday.

Team Records
Alvernia 8-8 (2-7 MACC)
York 14-3 (8-1 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Alvernia scored the first bucket of the game and moved out to an early 6-2 lead, but over the next five minutes York countered with nine unanswered points to take an 11-6 lead. Bradi Zumbrum led the way for York on that run with five points with Brooklyn Naylor and Meghan Carlson each chipping in with a bucket. Kayla Ferris gave the Spartans the three-point edge at the end of the quarter as she hauled in an offensive rebound and scored a layup just before time expired.
  • York held Alvernia scoreless through the first 3:35 of the second quarter, but the Spartans failed to make it hurt as they scored just one bucket of their own during that span. The two teams went on to combine for just 15 total points in the quarter. York held Alvernia to a 2-for-15 (13.3%) effort from the floor, but the Golden Wolves gained some ground at the free throw line as they went 3-for-4. Zumbrum scored the final bucket of the first half with 1:34 left to send York into halftime with a 26-22 lead.
  • Ferris scored the first four points of the second half, both on fast breaks, as York jumped out to its largest lead to that point (+8) at 30-22. Zumbrum scored the final four points of the quarter for York to set a new career-high with 17 as she put York ahead by seven. It appeared the Spartans would end the quarter with a seven point lead, but suddenly Alvernia was awarded a trio of foul shots with no time left on the clock. Tyra Robinson went on to make two of her three free throws as the Golden Wolves trailed 40-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • A Ferris jumper swelled the Spartan lead back to eight, 44-36, after three minutes of play into the fourth quarter. On the next York possession, Carlson found Savannah Wilson on the left wing for a three-pointer as the Spartan lead extended to double-digits for the first time on the day. Wilson then delivered the dagger when she knocked down a deep three to beat the shot clock with 44 seconds left to give York a 60-48 lead.
