Spartan Men Fall 2-1 to #15 Rowan in Spirited Effort

YORK, Pa. - The York men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 setback to #15 Rowan in the inaugural meeting between the two programs on Wednesday at Graham Field.

Team Records
#15 Rowan 3-0-0
York 1-1-1

How It Happened
  • York controlled the possession through the opening minutes and managed to get a good look on goal when Noah Roche whistled a shot just wide of the left post. Rowan started to gain traction three minutes in when Wilby Alfred had a good look through traffic, but his shot rolled just outside the left post as well.
  • Rowan continued with the offensive pressure and caught a break with a Spartan own goal in the 8'. Following a Profs throw-in, the ball landed directly on a Spartan head and deflected off a Spartan shoulder as the ball found its way into the back of the net.
  • Rowan had its first quality chance of the game in the 26' as Amias Colestock beat his defender and dribbled inside the right side of the box. Colestock went low to the left corner of the net, but Brady Bixler sprawled out to make the save and prevent the Spartans from taking a two-goal deficit.
  • The Spartans came out of the halftime break with the field tilted in their favor as they compiled a 4-1 shot advantage through the first six minutes.
  • Rowan suddenly put a pause on the Spartan momentum with a goal off a corner set piece in the 53'. Alex Ferrara sent the pass in from the corner and Turlough Gartlan rose up from the crowd and deflected the ball in off his head.
  • Rowan had chances to extend the lead in the 71' and 72' as the Profs had two clean looks on net, but Bixler was there to answer the call for York both times.
  • Despite facing a two-goal deficit, the Spartans remained on the hunt offensively and were rewarded for their efforts in the 78'. A Rowan foul inside the box led to a Spartan PK attempt and Tyler Howlett finished high left for the goal to cut the deficit in half.
  • The two sides would go on to combine for one more total shot through the final 11 minutes as the Profs escaped with the victory.
