First Half Tallies Lifts Salisbury Past York

SALISBURY, Md. - A pair of first half tallies eight minutes apart made the difference on Wednesday night as York men's soccer suffered a 2-0 setback on the road to former conference rival Salisbury.

Team Records
York 2-4-3
Salisbury 3-4-0

How It Happened
  • Salisbury opened the scoring off a corner in the 22nd minute. The ball was played in long and headed back towards the middle by Alex Floyd. Owen Peters collected the loose ball and shot low through traffic past Brady Bixler who was screened on the shot and couldn't get a hand on it.
  • The Sea Gulls capitalized once again off a corner in the 30th minute. The ball was played in from left to right where a Sea Gull headed it high towards the net. Bixler came out to make a play on the header, but ended up knocking it down to the foot of Peters who one-touched a shot inside the right post for his second tally of the game.
  • Just under 11 minutes left in the first half, the Spartans had a set piece opportunity with the ball placed six yards outside the 18-yard line. Tyler Howlett unleashed a strong shot to the left side of the net to force a diving save by Gabe Dunn.
  • Bixler helped keep the Spartan deficit from growing further as he notched a trio of saves in the first 16 minutes of the second half.
  • Salisbury did a good job of holding possession and controlling the pace down the stretch as the Gulls limited the Spartans to just one shot in the final 32 minutes of play.

Up Next
The Spartans will play their inaugural MAC Commonwealth game on Saturday as they welcome neighboring rival No. 9 Messiah to Graham Field. Kick off is set for 3 p.m.

Notes
Series record: 27-16-6 in favor of Salisbury … Wednesday night's matchup marked the first time since 1985 York and Salisbury squared off as non-conference foes … the two programs faced each other six times prior to Salisbury joining the Capital Athletic Conference in the 1994 season with the Sea Gulls owning a 3-2-1 record in those games.
