Brady Bixler backstops Spartans with 13-save performance

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Playing in their second-straight double-overtime contest of the week, the Spartans put together a gutsy performance on Saturday to earn a 2-2 result at #6 Rochester. York played the final 41:38 of regulation and both 10-minute overtime periods a man down after a red card forced the Spartans into a short-handed unit. Goalkeeper Brady Bixler stepped up big for the Spartans in a time of need with a career-high 13 saves.

How It Happened
  • Rochester had prime opportunities early, but Brady Bixler rose to the occasion for the Spartans. In the 6th minute, RU's Tejan Borchers headed a cross from the left wing for the right corner, but Bixler was there to snare it. Seven minutes later, Rochester's Ryan Hecker chipped a ball to the back post where Will Eisold's header was targeted for the low right corner, but Bixler got there just before the ball crossed the line.
  • The Spartans opened the scoring 30 minutes into the match. Noah Roche crossed the ball from the left wing into the middle where McClain Smith ripped it into the top right corner for his third tally of the season.
  • The Spartan lead was short-lived as Rochester notched the equalizer three minutes later. Joe Anderson crossed the ball from the left side into the box and Charlie Shanks redirected it inside the right post. The Yellow Jackets notched the go ahead tally four minutes later when Tommy Nelson served a corner kick into the box and Rio Kehe headed it inside the post.
  • The Yellow Jacket lead held up until the 72nd minute when the Spartans evened the score on a PK. RU's Will Eisold fouled Drew Ruehlicke a yard from the end line to give York the PK opportunity. Tyler Howlett stepped to the penalty spot of the Spartans and delivered a shot inside the right post for the equalizer.
  • Bixler made a pair of saves in the closing minutes of regulation to preserve the tie. Bixler went on to play brilliantly in the over time periods. He racked up for saves in the first OT period and then repelled a series of three-straight corner kicks in the second period with yet another save in the final minute.

Up Next
The Spartans will be back on the road Wednesday with a trip to face former CAC rival Salisbury. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.

Notes
This was the inaugural meeting between the two programs … both teams completed their second-straight 110-minute contest of the week as the Spartans battled to a 1-1 draw with Marymount on Wednesday and the Yellow Jackets drew even with SUNY Geneseo, 1-1, in their midweek match … Brady Bixler's 13-save performance ranks as the second-most in program history behind Billy Bridegum's record-setting 15-save game against Mary Washington on Oct. 30, 2019 … Bixler's outing is just the sixth double-digit save performance in program history.
