Field Hockey Falls at #5 Messiah in Commonwealth Play

Della scores late for York's lone goal

GRANTHAM, PA – The York College field hockey team had a rough six-minute stretch in the third quarter of the MAC Commonwealth match at #5 Messiah on Saturday. Unfortunately for York, the Falcons took advantage of York's struggles as they scored three goals during that stretch as Messiah eventually won the league game 4-1.

Score: York 1, #5 Messiah 4
Records: York 6-2 (1-1 MACC), #5 Messiah 7-1 (2-0 MACC)

How It Happened
• The teams battled back and forth in the opening two quarters with very little to show for it. The Falcons got two first quarter shots while both teams had one second quarter shot. The Spartans earned a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute but Rachel Della's attempt was saved by Falcon goalie Catie Brubaker, keeping the game scoreless at the half.
• The Falcons began their three-goal spurt with a Teagan Murrie goal off an assist from Lauren Seubert nine minutes into the second half. Messiah struck again 1:21 later as Murrie notched her second goal of the game off a Linday McFeatures assist, giving the hosts a two-goal margin. Messiah got an unassisted goal from Jennie Young 16 seconds before the end of the third quarter to complete the spurt. Messiah scored three goals in 5:44 of game action.
• Messiah got their fourth goal with 30 seconds left in regulation as Nicole Shank scored off a Leah Bryner pass for her first goal of the season.
• York averted the shutout with a Della goal off a rebound of a Maycee Collison shot off a corner after time had expired.

Spartan Notes:
The Spartans have now lost seven straight to the Falcons as Messiah leads the all-time series 13-4-6 … the Spartans have lost two straight after their 6-0 start but both losses have come to nationally ranked teams (#17 Susquehanna and #5 Messiah) on the road … the four Messiah goals marks the most the Spartans have allowed since October 26, 2019 when #13 Christopher Newport scored five on York … after scoring at least two goals in every game during their 6-0 start, the Spartans have scored just one in each of the last two games … York has had just seven shots in each of the last two games … the penalty stroke attempt by Rachel Della in the second quarter was York's first stroke attempt of the year … the Spartans will play three straight games at home starting on Wednesday.
