Spartans Draw with Marymount, 1-1, in Rainy York

Freshman Noah Roche notches first-career tally

YORK, Pa. - The York men's soccer team battled through a rain-soaked evening to a 1-1 draw with Marymount on Wednesday at Graham Field.

Team Records
Marymount 3-4-1
York 2-3-2

How It Happened
  • Early Marymount infractions led to a few free kick opportunities for York inside of 30 yards, but the Spartans were unable to produce a solid chance as the rain began to fall.
  • In the 30th minute, York pushed the ball up the right side where eventually McClain Smith played the ball in and below the six-yard line. His cross found the waiting foot of Noah Roche in the middle who one-touched the pass into the back of the net for the first tally of the game.
  • The Saints had a few danger opportunities throughout the first half, but the Spartan back line, anchored by Andrew Colebrook and Tyler Buberl, snuffed out the onrushing Marymount forwards.
  • The Spartans owned most of the opportunities in the first half as they took a 7-4 shot advantage and a 4-1 margin in corners into the halftime break.
  • Tyler Howlett had a great opportunity to extend the Spartan lead in the 58th minute. Howlett collected the ball in the right side of the box, but was unable to fully settle the slippery ball and sent a shot just wide of the net.
  • Marymount spoiled the Spartan lead in the 61st minute as the Saints capitalized off a set piece. Nicholas Vigo started the play by sending the ball in from the corner and Carlos Varona finished a header from close range for the equalizer.
  • Sean Metz almost gave York the go ahead goal in the 74th minute as he collected a pass, turned and fired a rocket just inches over the crossbar from 18 yards out.
  • The Spartans had another great opportunity in the 83rd as Roche was once again involved. Roche had a step on his defender with the ball on his foot when Saint keeper Ronald Clark came out beyond the 18-yard line to make a play on the ball. The ball scooted by Clark and began rolling towards the open goal, but Marymount defender Brandon Jardine managed to recover quickly and cleared the ball safely out of bounds to keep the game tied.
  • York had a golden opportunity in the 103rd minute when Smith played a leading cross into the box where he found Roche in the middle, but Roche one-touched the pass just wide right of the goal.
  • Throughout the entirety of the evening, the Spartan defensive unit, led by Colebrook, Buberl, Ethan Lassen and Mitchell Seipt, excelled at limiting Marymount's chances and gave their teammates a puncher's chance of walking away with a victory.
