Field Hockey Edged by #17 Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - A pair of third quarter goals for No. 17 Susquehanna proved to be the difference as the River Hawks edged the York field hockey team, 3-1, on Wednesday evening.

Team Records
RV York 6-1
#17 Susquehanna 6-0

How It Happened
  • The two teams each registered a corner a piece with zero combined shots through the first quarter of play as each side settled in.
  • The River Hawks started to turn up the pressure in the second quarter with a pair of early corners and then recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 21st minute as Spartan goalie Kaitlyn Wallace denied Sam Banks. Later in the same minute of play, Susquehanna was awarded a corner and cashed in on the opportunity. Hayley Taylor made a defensive save on the initial shot off the insert, but SU's Ashley Shreffler cleaned up the rebound on the backside to break up the scoreless tie.
  • The River Hawks forced another flurry of shots in the final moments of the first half, but Wallace came through with a clutch save to snuff out a developing one-on-one opportunity. Susquehanna out-shot the Spartans, 5-1, in the second quarter and produced a 4-1 advantage in corners.
  • The field tilted in Susquehanna's favor in the third quarter as the River Hawks tacked on two more tallies. The second of the two goals came in transition as Banks sent in a hard insert from outside the circle and Rebecca Ripans got a piece of it to deflect the ball into the back of the net.
  • Despite a three-goal deficit, the Spartans remained hungry for a goal and their efforts were rewarded in the 54th minute of play. A scrum for possession ensued in front of the Susquehanna cage and after having one shot turned away, the Spartans finally broke through when Sam Collis jammed it in from close range. The Spartans had another opportunity to close the game as they forced a corner with just under three minutes left to play, but Hannah Huffman was unable to get a clean look on the cage as she sent her shot wide. York earned another corner with 27 seconds left following, but could not get a shot off and turned it over to SU on a foul as time expired.

Up Next
The Spartans remain on the road as they make the short trip north to No. 5 Messiah in a key MAC Commonwealth matchup slated for a 1 p.m. start.

Notes
Series record: 18-17 in favor of York … the Spartans entered the game receiving votes in the NFHCA poll for the first time since 2018 ... tonight's matchup marked the first time since 1999 York faced a ranked Susquehanna team when SU was tabbed No. 9 ... the loss snapped York's six-game win streak to start the season, which now ranks as the third-longest win streak to start a season in program history and the best start since 2000 when the Spartans began the season 8-0 … Susquehanna matched their season-high with three goals on the day as they have now scored three tallies in back-to-back games … the River Hawks entered the day with just eight goals total on the season and own one of the stingiest defenses in the country having only surrendered a total of three goals through six games … Sam Collis moves into a tie with Hannah Huffman for the team lead in goals with five on the season ... Collis' five tallies matches her single-season career-best from 2018.
