How It Happened
  • The first set was back-and-forth the whole way to the finish with Randolph-Macon holding a slight edge early on. Trailing 11-9, York utilized a 6-1 run to regain the lead, 14-12, highlighted by a pair of kills by Shannon Salo and a pair of aces by Abby Diehl. The back-and-forth battle would ensue once again until the Spartans managed to crack open a crucial 21-18 advantage. The Yellow Jackets would cut the deficit to one point four different times down the stretch, but York managed to fight them off each time until finally Megan Rizzi put down the set-clinching kill to give the Spartans the 25-23 victory.
  • A plethora of Yellow Jacket hitting errors, combined with opportunistic serving boosted York out an 8-4 lead to start the second set. Randolph-Macon fought back and a couple of key blocks gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the set at 15-14. From that point, York picked up the scoring pace and Rizzi helped jump start the effort with a pair of kills to put York on top, 18-16. Salo set the table for a York victory with a kill and a block on consecutive rallies as York took a 23-20 lead. Claire Shorb finished off the set with a kill as the Spartans claimed a 25-20 win. Salo came up big defensively as she led all players with four blocks in the second set.
  • The Spartans started the third set strong and scooted out to a 10-5 advantage aided by four kills from Rizzi. York kept swinging and rushed out to a 20-9 lead with four more kills from the arm of Rizzi. The Yellow Jackets picked a few blocks made a slight push at a comeback attempt, but the hill was too steep to climb as the Spartans rolled to a 25-16 victory, led by Rizzi's 10 kills.
