Spartan Volleyball Drops Opening Match in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. - The York volleyball team opened play at the Johns Hopkins Invitational with a 3-0 defeat to Ithaca on Friday evening.

Team Records
York 5-3
Ithaca 4-5

How It Happened
  • Tyler Williams led York with a pair of kills as the two teams stood tied, 6-6, in the early part of the first set. The Bombers then went on a 6-0 run and never looked back from then on. A kill by Claire Shorb would cut the deficit to four at 15-11, but a few costly mistakes shortly after by York propelled Ithaca to the 25-15 first-set victory.
  • Ithaca rushed out to a 15-6 lead in the second set, using a 9-1 run to take a four-point lead to a nine-point lead. A string of four-straight Spartan points, including a pair of aces by Abby Diehl, cut the deficit to five at 15-10. The two teams traded points before the Bombers ended the set on a 7-3 run to wrap up the 25-16 set victory.
  • A pair of kills by Briyana Shepard and a kill by Shorb put the Spartans in a 3-3 tie early in the third set. From there, the Spartan miscues started to pile up as Ithaca opened up a 13-5 advantage with the Bombers recording just three kills during that span. Shepard tacked on a pair of kills late, while Jennifer Taylor and Sydney Wilber also got involved in the scoring, but it was not enough as Ithaca rolled to a 25-14 win.

Up Next
The Spartans will be back in Baltimore tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. against Randolph-Macon and finishing up against the nation's top-ranked team in Johns Hopkins at 3 p.m.
