Spartans Fall in 2-1 Battle at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The York women's soccer team suffered their third one-goal loss of the season in a gritty 2-1 defeat at Gettysburg on Thursday night.

York 2-3-0
Gettysburg 3-0-0

How It Happened
  • The Bullets got on the board first as they scratched in a goal in the 16th minute. Gettysburg's Jenna Weinberg sent a long pass up the right side into the box where teammate Lena Schaefer headed it towards the goal. Spartan keeper Cat McCarty dove to her right to make a play on the ball and as she did, the ball narrowly slipped through her outstretched hands and trickled across the endline.
  • The Spartans weathered another Bullet flurry in the 26th minute and then got on the offensive themselves with a pair of corners and a pair of shots in the final 10 minutes of the first half. York gained their footing as the half wore on and managed to even up the shot count, 5-5, heading into the break.
  • The momentum York gained at the end of the first half carried over to the second half as the Green and White knotted the score, 1-1, in the 50th minute. On an offensive run, the Spartans played the ball across the field from right to left when all of a sudden, Jenna Cholowinski seemingly came out of nowhere to collect the pass. The senior put a strong left foot on the ball from over 30 yards out and sailed her shot into the upper right corner of the net for a dramatic tying goal.
  • McCarty held the Bullets in check with saves in the 54th and 56th minutes, and again in the 66th. The Gettysburg pressure would eventually amount to a breakthrough in the 73rd minute when Erika Muskus slipped through a soft spot in the Spartan back line and found herself in a one-on-one with McCarty. The Spartan netminder came out to cut down the angle, but Muskus put a deke on McCarty to create a clear shooting lane and finished her shot into the yawning net.
  • The Spartans mustered up one last quality chance off a corner kick in the 79th minute. After the ball was served into the box, a battle for possession ensued. As a result, Bullet keeper Maddie Cunningham got caught out of position in the flurry and Makayla Harper had the ball on her foot inside the six-yard line. Unfortunately, several members of the Gettysburg defensive unit managed to position themselves between Harper and the goal as they blocked her shot and then cleared the ball to safety.
