Volleyball Picks Up First MAC Commonwealth Win

York blanks Alvernia 3-0 in conference home opener

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad made a little history on Tuesday evening as the Spartans picked up their first-ever MAC Commonwealth volleyball win. The Spartans blanked Alvernia University 3-0 for the win, making their home conference debut a success.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a fantastic start to the match as they sprinted out to a 10-1. The Green and White scored nine points during Claire Shorb's serve. Shorb had two service aces on the run while Tyler Williams added three kills during the spurt. York pushed the lead to 14-3, their biggest lead of the first game. The Spartans eventually grew the lead to 12 (21-9) on another Shorb service ace. The Golden Wolves scored six of the next seven points, trimming York's lead to 22-15. The Spartans bounced back to score three of the final four points of the set to close out the set 25-16.
• The second set saw the Golden Wolves jump on the Spartans early as they took an 8-3 lead. Alvernia eventually led 13-8 but York ripped off five straight points to tie the set at 13. The set would be tied five more times with the final tie coming at 23-all. An Alvernia ball handling error and a Shorb kill allowed the Spartans to earn a 25-23 set two win.
• York opened the third set by scoring 13 of the first 19 points of the game. The Spartan lead was 19-12 when York ripped off six straight points to end the match. The run was highlight by a Megan Rizzi kill and a service ace.

The Spartans improved to 1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play … the Spartans are now 6-0 all-time against Alvernia … it was the first meeting between the two teams since 2017 when the Spartans won 3-2 at Bethlehem, PA at the Moravian Tournament … Junior Claire Shorb set a career-high with her four service aces … the four aces were her first of her season … Shorb registered seven kills, a mark she has reached in four of her five matches this season … Senior Tyler Williams had 11 kills as she reached double figures for the third time this year … Williams' .292 attack percentage was a season-high … Junior Sydney Wilber tied a season-high with five blocks in the victory … Wilber has recorded five blocks in four different matches for the Spartans … sophomore libero Jasmine Doguin notched 11 digs in the win as she has reached double figures in digs in five of her six matches this year … the Spartans had another 12 service errors in the match as they now have 108 in 27 sets for the year … York registered another solid day at the net as they recorded 10 blocks … they have reached double figures in blocks in five of their seven matches in 2021 … the Spartans have won three in a row, their longest streak since York won four in a row from September 27, 2019 (Catholic) to October 2, 2019 (St. Mary's).

The Spartans head down 83 on Friday as they travel to Johns Hopkins to play three contests. York plays Ithaca Friday at 4:00 pm. The Green and White then faces Randolph-Macon on Saturday at 1:00 pm followed by a match against Johns Hopkins, the defending national champion and #1 ranked team in the country. The match against the Blue Jays is scheduled for a 3:00 pm.
