Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Tri-Match

YORK, Pa. - The York volleyball team posted a Saturday sweep as they notched victories over Penn St. Harrisburg (3-0) and Keuka (3-1) in the York Community Progress Council Tri-Match at Wolf Gym.

How It Happened
  • The first set see-sawed back and forth until York broke a 21-18 lead on a four-point run aided by a pair of Harrisburg attack errors. The Lions would go on to hand the Spartans three more points to end the set and Megan Rizzi notched the winning point for York on a kill.
  • Rizzi and Briyana Shepard led all players with four kills each in the opening set as owned a 12-6 advantage as a team after one set of play.
  • York ran out to a 6-1 lead to open the second set, led by a pair of kills by Rizzi, and maintained that cushion the rest of the way. Rizzi notched another kill to give York a 21-15 lead as the Spartans out-scored Harrisburg, 5-2, down the stretch to secure the 25-17 win.
  • Rizzi was the catalyst for York in the second set as she led all players with six kills and hit a staggering .750.
  • With the third set knotted up at 17 all, back-to-back kills by Shepard sprung a six-point run for the Spartans. Harrisburg fought back to cut the deficit to three, but consecutive kills by Jae Fitch and Tyler Williams sealed the set and the match for York.

How It Happened
  • The first played tight the entire way until Keuka took a 24-21 lead. Facing set point, York scored five straight points to take a 25-24 lead fueled by a pair of Alyssa Mott aces and a pair of Megan Rizzi kills.
  • The two teams traded blows until back-to-back kills by Rizzi and Jae Fitch clinched the first set for York, 29-27.
  • York held set point with a 24-19 lead in the second set, but this time it was the Wolves who came storming back to extend the set. Keuka scored seven-straight to end the set with just one kill to their credit.
  • A six-point run opened up a 19-10 lead for York midway through the third set as two kills by Briyana Shepard and two aces by Abby Diehl fueled the run. The Spartans kept Keuka at an arm's length the rest of the way as they sealed up the 25-17 victory.
  • The Spartans fell behind 3-0 to start the fourth set, but quickly turned things around with a five-point run. Tyler Williams started the run with a block and went on to contribute two kills as the Spartans opened a 5-3 lead.
  • The Wolves would even up the score, 8-8, but the Spartans would surrender just three more points the rest of the way en route to a 25-11 victory.

Up Next
The Spartans remain at home and will face Alvernia in a MAC Commonwealth matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Briyana Shepard and Megan Rizzi tied for the team lead with 23 kills on the day and Jae Fitch finished second with 10 … Fitch led the way with a .563 hitting pct. and Rizzi hit .435 … Tyler Williams paced the team with 4.00 kills per set as she totaled eight on the day … Abby Diehl compiled 36 assists on the day, edging Alyssa Mott's 31 … Sydney Wilber led York with six total blocks on the day, while Fitch and Jennifer Taylor each racked up five.
