Spartans Stun #18 Messiah as Falcons Suffer Rare Home Defeat

York Wins Eighth-Straight and Snaps Multiple Messiah Win Streaks in the Process

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The York women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter run to comeback and win their eighth-straight victory with a 61-55 win at #18 Messiah on Wednesday night. The Spartans handed the Falcons just their second-ever loss inside Hitchcock Arena since beginning play in 2018-19 and ended multiple Messiah win streaks with the outcome of tonight's game.

The Spartans trailed by four to start the fourth quarter, but opened the quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 57-50 lead with 1:59 left and ended up out-scoring the Falcons 15-5 in the final quarter to pull off the historic upset victory.

Team Records
York 8-1 (3-0 MACC)
#18 Messiah 6-2 (2-1 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Alana Bortner led all players with nine points in the first quarter and scored York's first five points of the game as she hit a three-pointer to give the Spartans their first lead of the game, 5-4, less than two minutes in. Messiah had a three-point lead on two different occasions in the first quarter, but York would never let the lead swell beyond that as Bortner responded both times to cut the deficit to one on each occasion. Brooklyn Naylor put York back in the lead, 15-14, with 1:50 left, but Messiah's Eleana Eckley hit a three with 1:21 remaining to give the Falcons a 17-15 advantage at the end of one quarter of play. With just seven seconds left in the first quarter, Kayla Ferris was charged with her third foul which forced the Spartans to play large stretches of the game without one of the MAC Commonwealth's top players.
  • Messiah crept out to a four-point advantage, 21-17, with 6:20 left in a tightly-contested first half, but Bortner again responded immediately with a three which started a 7-2 Spartan run as they led 24-23 with 3:42 left. The Falcons would go on to finish the first half strong, out-scoring York 9-4 in the final three minutes to take a 32-28 lead into the break. York and Messiah were about even from the floor at 36 and 35 percent, respectively, but the Falcons owned a 26-16 rebounding advantage and were on the better end of a 9-4 foul margin.
  • Eckley opened the third quarter scoring with a three to give Messiah its largest lead of the night, 35-28 (+7). York responded with points on back-to-back possession sandwiched around a Messiah turnover to quickly reel the Falcons back in to a three-point lead with just under nine minutes to play in the quarter. From there, Bortner scored five points on a 6-2 Spartan run as York took its first lead of the second half, 38-37, with 6:02 remaining in the third. Messiah went on to out-score York 13-8 to close out the quarter and owned 50-46 lead heading into the fourth.
  • As previously mentioned, the Spartans opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run as they held Messiah scoreless for nearly nine-straight minutes. After a Ferris layup tied the game, 50-50, with 6:43 left, Savannah Wilson stole the ball on the ensuing Messiah possession, which turned into a Bortner layup on the other end to give York a 52-50 lead with 6:20 left and the Spartans never surrendered the lead from there. York would go on to record eight-consecutive stops before Messiah finally put points on the board with 1:10 left, but it was too little too late as the momentum had completely shifted into York's favor.

Notes
The Spartans are now 12-34 all-time against Messiah … York's victory marked a rare phenomenon as it snapped Messiah's 24-game overall conference win streak (last loss Jan. 8, 2020 vs. Widener) and their 33-game home conference win streak (last loss Jan. 14, 2017 vs. Albright) … more impressively, York's victory halted an overall 40-game home win streak for the Falcons (Nov. 8, 2018 vs. York) … it is just the second-ever loss for Messiah inside Hitchcock Arena (40-2 in that span) … York has the only two victories against Messiah in Hitchcock Arena since the Falcons made the permanent move down the hall from Brubaker Auditorium at the start of the 2018-19 season … the Falcons are 76-6 on their home floor since the start of the 2015-16 season and 84-9 in conference play during that span … York held Messiah to its second-lowest field goal percentage of the season (35.2%) as the Falcons matched their season-high for turnovers (29) … York shot over 40% from the field for the second time in conference play and the third time overall this season … Alana Bortner has now scored 20 or more points twice in the last three games … Savannah Wilson reached double figures for the eighth-straight game.

Up Next
The Spartans return to play next Wednesday with a MAC Commonwealth road trip to Widener.
