Women's Basketball Claims Victory in First-Ever MAC Game

Alana Bortner Paced York with 20 Points as Spartans Improve Win Streak to Six

READING, Pa. - The York women's basketball team led wire to wire in the program's inaugural MAC Commonwealth game Wednesday night at Alvernia as the Spartans rolled to a 70-63. York extends its win streak to six after dropping the season opener 22 days ago to Johns Hopkins.

Alana Bortner paced the Spartan offense with a season-high 20 points, while Kayla Ferris notched her 11th career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Savannah Wilson also landed in double figures for the sixth-straight game with 13 points on the night.

Team Records
York 6-1 (1-0 MACC)
Alvernia 3-3 (0-1 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Spartans came out of the gates cooking as they racked up a 15-3 lead through the first six and a half minutes of play. York shot 6-for-11 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, on that opening run with Alana Bortner and Savannah Wilson combining for 11 points. York owned a 20-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter as the Green and white shot 43.8% from the field and held the Golden Wolves to just 21.1%, including a 0-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
  • York continued to look strong as the second quarter unfolded and took their largest lead of the first half, 35-21, when Bortner knocked down her third three-pointer with 2:53 left. Bortner and Wilson would go on to pace the Spartans with five points each in the quarter to take a 37-26 lead into halftime. The Golden Wolves kept things from getting completely out of hand as they doubled-up York on the boards in the second quarter with a 16-8 advantage, including a 9-2 edge on the offensive glass.
  • After shooting 0-for-13 from beyond the arc in the first half, Alvernia's Taliyah Malone knocked down her team's first three-pointer just over three minutes into the third quarter as Alvernia opened the second half on a 7-2 run. The Golden Wolves would cut the deficit to four points, 39-35, a minute lanter, but the Spartans went on to out-score Alvernia 15-10 in the final six minutes of the third as they shot 6-for-11 from the field during that span led by Kayla Ferris' five points.
  • Just under four minutes into the fourth quarter, York put the game out of reach as Ferris capped off an 8-2 run with a jumper to give the Spartans their largest lead of the game (+15) at 62-47. The Golden Wolves would make an attempt at a comeback, scoring the next nine-straight points, but time was not on their side as they trailed by six with 71 seconds left and could get anything going from three-point range as they finished the quarter 2-for-11. York went on to seal the win with a 6-for-8 performance from the free-throw line in the final minute of play, led by Bradi Zumbrum's 3-for-4 effort.
