Farrow, Rohrbaugh Claim Titles as Spartans Open Season

Spartans Place 6th at Ned McGinley Invitaional with a Trio of Place Winners

RESULTS

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - York wrestling opened the 2021-22 season placing 6th out of 15 teams with a trio of place winners, including a pair of champions, at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's on Saturday.


Dalton Rohrbaugh claimed the 133-pound title and Camden Farrow captured the title at 197 lbs. while Blake Shalbert placed fourth at 141. A total of seven Spartans finished inside the top-eight in their respective brackets, including two at 133 with Rohrbaugh and Jared Kuhns.

Top Performers
  • Top-seeded Dalton Rohrbaugh went 4-0 in his Spartan debut en route to the 133-pound title. The York County native notched a 12-2 major decision in his first bout in a York singlet and followed that up with a first-period fall (2:38) over Gustav Petroske (King's) in his second match. Rohrbaugh received a win by default against teammate Jared Kuhns in the semifinals and then came back late to edge out a 5-3 victory over Kyle Kaiser (Roger Williams) in the title bout.
  •  Third-seeded Jared Kuhns went 3-2 on the day at 133 lbs. and ended his day in the consi semifinals with a top-eight performance. Kuhns ripped off three-straight bonus point victories to start the day with a technical fall and two majors, outscoring his opponents 38-6 on that run. Kuhns then defaulted to Rohrbaugh in the semifinals before falling, 10-4, to ninth-ranked Josh Wilson (Greensboro) in the consi semifinals.
  • Sixth-seeded Blake Shalbert compiled a record of 5-2 with a pair of falls on his way to capturing fourth place at 141 pounds. Shalbert began his day with a 13-7 victory and a first-period fall (1:42) before falling, 3-1, to third-seeded Russell Benson (Delaware Valley) in the quarterfinals. Shalber got back on track with a fall (2:36) and a medical forfeit before losing to Benson again, 10-1, in the third-place match.
  • Jared Bair opened his season with a strong 5-2 performance to earn a top-eight spot at 149. After being shutout in his opening bout, Bair went on to post back-to-back falls and then a pair of decisions to get into the consolation quarterfinals. Bair then put together a 12-0 lead over fourth-seeded Kyle Tino (Wilkes) before Tino defaulted in the third period. Bair ended his day in the consolation semifinals with a no contest to top-seeded Ben Bariso (Roger Williams) who went on to capture third place.
  • Fifth-seeded Timmy Sparks went 4-2 to clinch as a top-eight performer at 165 lbs. The senior started 2-0, including a 17-0 technical fall, before falling to fourth-seeded James Geiger (Wilkes) in the quarterfinals. In his next bout, Sparks avoided back-to-back losses with a takedown in SV-1 to remain in contention and then recorded three takedowns in an 8-5 win to advance to the consolation semifinals. Sparks had a good battle going with second-seed Morgan Peterson (So. Virginia) until Peterson scored a third period takedown and advanced to the third-place bout on a 7-5 win.
  • Jared Townsend compiled five bonus-points wins on the day to reach the consolation semifinals and end up with a top-eight finish at 174. The freshman went 1-1 to start the day and then ripped off four-straight pins, including one against 10-ranked George Mosley (Averett), to clinch his top-eight spot.
  • Top-seeded Camden Farrow performed up to his billing as he went 4-0 with two bonus wins to capture the 197-pound title. Farrow compiled nine takedowns on the day, including two against Cameron Butka (Wilkes) in the title bout, as he started the season in dominating fashion.

Notes
Six Spartans were seeded entering on the day with Dalton Rohrbaugh and Camden Farrow garnering the No. 1 spot in their respective brackets … York finished second behind Wilkes among the four MAC schools (Delaware Valley & King's) and third behind Averett and Wilkes among the eight Southeast Regional teams (Delaware Valley, Greensboro, King's, Southern Virginia & Waynesburg) that competed on Saturday.
