Golden Goal Lifts Alvernia Past York

Alvernia Scores in 99th Minute to Break Scoreless Tie

READING, Pa. - A golden goal in the 99th minute lifted Alvernia past the York men's soccer team Saturday night in Reading for MAC Commonwealth victory.

Team Records
York 2-6-3 (0-2-0 MACC)
Alvernia 9-2-0 (3-0-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Golden Wolves had the upper hand early as they out-shot York 6-0 in the first 10 minutes. Keegan Brade was busy in net as he made a pair of saves during that span. The Spartans returned fire with three shots on goal in the next 10 minutes as Alvernia keeper Ben Solsky kept the game scoreless.
  • Alvernia had the higher percentage of chances in the first half and took an 11-5 shot advantage and a 4-0 lead in corners into the locker room. Each keeper posted four saves in the first 45 minutes.
  • In the 55th minute, Brade made a spectacular save to preserve the scoreless draw. The Spartan keeper managed to get a few fingertips on a high shot by Alvernia's Justin Fetrow from nearly 18-yards out.
  • A free kick by York in the 75th minute nearly paid dividends. Matt Zeiders curled a service into the box from 28 yards out and Noah Roche headed the pass towards the lower right corner, but Solsky laid out to make the stop for Alvernia.
  • The Spartans seemed to have the upper hand as the game shifted to overtime. However, one run up the field for Alvernia in the 99th minute changed everything. With traffic in front of Brade, Alvernia's Cameron Rowe had a shot from a harsh angle on the left side of the box and somehow managed to tuck the ball inside the upper right corner of the net for the golden goal.
