Spartans Blank Albright to Capture First-Ever MAC Commonwealth Win

York Remains Undefeated Against Albright in All-Time Series

YORK, Pa. - The York men's soccer team notched the program's first-ever MAC Commonwealth victory in a 2-0 victory over Albright on Wednesday at Graham Field. Tyler Howlett netted the eventual game-winner with his eighth-minute tally and Tyler Buberl added an insurance goal in the 50th minute.

Team Records
Albright 3-9-1 (0-4-0 MACC)
York 3-6-3 (1-2-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Tyler Howlett put York in the early lead with a spectacular tally in the eight minute. The ball was played in from the right and headed out of the box by an Albright defender. Fortunately for York, Howlett was the first player to meet the loose ball. He settled it and laced a volley to the upper left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
  • Albright had a chance to respond four minutes later with a free kick less than a foot outside the 18-yard line. John Vilano took the kick for the Lions and sent it directly into the Spartan wall.
  • Yaniv Gonyoe had a chance to net the equalizer for the Lions in the 28th minute as he swept up the right side. Gonyoe managed to clear his defender by a step and unleashed a shot on target, but it hit off the crossbar and fell harmlessly out of play.
  • The Spartans had a pair of shots find iron less than a minute apart in the 33rd and 34th minutes. Matt Zeiders ripped a shot from nearly 30 yards out in the middle of the field that grazed off the left post. Brandon Holy pushed up the left wing and sent in a shot that hit off the crossbar and fell out of the field of play.
  • York had another chance in the final minute on a set piece. Dom Barrett rose up out of the crowd and put a solid header on target, but it landed safely in the waiting arms of Lion keeper, Nick Barton.
  • The Spartans wasted little time extending the lead in the second half when Tyler Buberl notched a tally in the 50th minute. As the Spartans swept upfield towards the goal, Brayden Safely played a pass from the middle into the right side of the box. Buberl ran unmarked and unleashed a bullet directly over the keeper's head for his first-career tally.
  • York played a strong possession game for the entirety of the second half, limiting the Lions to just two shots for a total of four in the game
  • York had two good looks in the final two minutes of play. Ryan McElwain was fouled on his way towards the net and earned a free kick from 23 yards out. He put a strong foot on the kick and forced a desperation save by Barton to prevent a third tally. In the final minute, Safley went seeking for a tally of his own to add to his assist, but he was turned away by a Barton kick save after he rifled a shot from close range on the right.

Up Next
The Spartans return to the road for a Saturday MAC Commonwealth matchup at Lebanon Valley. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Notes
York remains undefeated against the Lions, improving their all-time series record to 6-0-0 … the win snaps the Spartans' seven-game winless streak during which they went 0-5-2 with a pair of one-goal losses, including one in overtime … York handed the Lions their first shutout in MAC Commonwealth play this season and held the Lions to zero shots on goal for the first time all season … Tyler Howlett moves into the team lead with four goals on the season and is top-5 in the conference.
