Spartans Clinch MAC Postseason Berth

York Tallies Twice Late in First Half in 2-1 Win Over Stevenson

YORK, Pa. - A pair of goals 65 seconds apart late in the first half proved to be the difference as the York men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Stevenson at home on Wednesday night. With the win, the Spartans punched their ticket to the MAC Commonwealth postseason and currently own the fourth seed with the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mustangs.

Team Records
Stevenson 8-8-2 (4-3-0 MACC)
York 6-7-3 (4-3-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Spartans had the field tilted severely in their favor through the first 25 minutes of play as they put together many runs deep into the attacking third, but just could not get a clean look on goal. Tyler Howlett registered the first shot of the game in the 20th minute as he blistered a shot from 18-yards out into the out-stretched arms of Stevenson keeper Kristian Slaby.
  • Stevenson began to level the field as they got fresh legs on the field with substitutions. Alex Morales recorded the first shot for the Mustangs in the 28th minute. A pass was played back to him from the end line, but Morales could not find his target as he ripped his shot high over the crossbar.
  • With fresh legs of their own on the field, the Spartans put a pair of goals on the board 65 seconds apart. In the 41st minute, Brayden Safley began the play with a long pass from the middle that sprung Drew Ruehlicke up the left side. Ruehlicke ran on and one-touched a cross to the right to Noah Roche who beat a sprawling Slaby for the game's first tally. York's second goal once again started with a ball played in from the left as this time it was Andrew Colebrook who served a pass into the box. Colebrook's pass deflected off a hip of a Mustang defender and scooted out to the waiting foot of Ethan Lassen who banged the ball in from eight yards out for his second goal of the season.
  • The Spartan defense held the Mustangs to just one shot in the second half prior to the 82nd minute when Stevenson put their first shot on goal for the game. With that shot on goal, the Mustangs cut the deficit in half as Brian Ventura knocked in a loose ball inside of six yards on a Stevenson corner kick.
  • York responded after letting up the goal and put the clamps down the rest of the way to secure the win and the postseason berth.
