Spartans Open MAC Play with Loss to #15 Messiah

YORK, Pa. - The York women's soccer held 15th-ranked Messiah scoreless for a half in a 3-0 loss at home on Saturday afternoon.

Team Records
#15 Messiah 6-2-1 (1-0-0 MACC)
York 6-4-0 (0-1-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The field tilted severely in Messiah's favor through the first 17 minutes of play as the Falcons racked up three quality looks on goal. Spartan keeper Cat McCarty came up with a trio of outstanding saves during that span.
  • Caitlyn Findlay had the first shot of the game for York and managed to put it on goal. The play started with Makayla Harper carrying the ball inside the box while holding off a defender and played a short pass back to Findlay. Findlay put a hard strike on target, but Falcon keeper, Lydia Watkins, was there to swallow up the shot.
  • The Falcons wasted little time getting on the board in the second half after being denied several times in the first. In the 51st minute, Kristina Akselsen found a little space just outside the 18-yard line on the right wing and unleashed a rocket to the back of the net.
  • McCarty denied Messiah in the 53rd and 56th minutes, but the relentless Falcons broke through again in the 59th minute. Brianna Seip found a crease up the right wing and sailed a shot in from approximately 21-yards out.
  • A fleury in front of the Spartan net led to another Falcon tally in the 71st. Kenzie Spodnik gained a loose ball inside the 18 and blistered a shot on goal where Moriah Morton made an amazing effort to get in front of the shot. After making the initial stop, Morton attempted to clear the ball off the endline and ended up putting the ball in her own net in a desperate move to send it to safety.

Up Next
The Spartans will be back at Graham Field on Wednesday night to face Rowan in a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
