Late Tallies Lift York to Conference Win at Hood

Spartans Remain Undefeated Against Blazers in All-Time Series

FREDERICK, Md. - The York men's soccer team scored a trio of goals in the final two minutes to notch a crucial 3-0 MAC Commonwealth victory at Hood on Tuesday night. Matt Zeiders tallied the eventual game-winner in the 70th minute and Noah Roche added a pair of insurance tallies in the 78th and 80th minutes.

Team Records
York 4-7-3 (2-3-0 MACC)
Hold 8-6-1 (1-4-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • York owned most of the possession in the first half and several deep runs into the final third, but struggled to create quality scoring chances off those opportunities.
  • The Spartans also excelled at neutralizing Hood's chances on the other end. The Blazers were held to zero shots on goal and just a pair of corner kicks.
  • York owned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks at the end of one half of play and a 9-7 advantage in total shots.
  • The Spartans had the field severely tilted in their favor through the first 20 minutes of the second half as the Green and White compiled a 7-2 shot advantage and 2-0 margin in corners.
  • One of the few runs made by Hood in the second half resulted in a penalty kick for the Blazers in the 68th minute. Luke Hammer took the kick for the Blazers and air-mailed his shot well over the crossbar as the game remained in a scoreless draw.
  • The Spartans went back on the offensive following the scare of the PK. After a York throw in deep in Blazer territory, the ball settled on the foot of Cole Kendra in the middle of the field. Kendra played a pass out to the right to Matt Zeiders streaking up the side. Zeiders proceeded to carry the ball towards the end line and sent a cross in from a harsh angle. Hood keeper Danny Castillo attempted to make a play on the ball, but whiffed and redirected it into the open net.
  • After a Spartan goal kick in the 78th minute, Ryan McElwain fed a pass through traffic in the middle to Noah Roche. Roche received the pass a few strides outside the 18, created a lane by veering to the right, and shot back left to the low corner York's second goal of the game.
  • In the 80th minute, Andrew Colebrook played a long ball from beyond the midfield line up to Roche outside the 18. Castillo came rushing out from his net to snare a potential shot, but Roche slipped a quick shot past the sprawling Castillo as he found the back of the net for the second time on the night.

Up Next
The Spartans return home for a pair of conference games next week, beginning with a Wednesday matchup with Eastern.

Notes
York improves to 8-0-0 all-time against Hood … tonight's meeting marked the first matchup between the two programs since 2011 when they played each other as then Capital Athletic Conference foes … Matt Zeider's game-winning goal is the first of his career and he now has two goals on the season … Noah Roche recorded his first-career multi-goal performance and joins Sean Metz as the only Spartans with multiple goals in a game this season … Roche is now tied with Tyler Howlett for the team point lead with nine … the win tonight is crucial for York's postseason hopes as they sit in a three-way tie with Eastern and Widener for fifth in the MAC Commonwealth standings … all three teams have yet to play each other and the top five teams qualify for the conference postseason.
