Sharp Shooting and Strong Defense Power Spartans to CAC Win over St. Mary's

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team got off to a great start and kept their foot on the gas as they rolled to an 81-66 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's College at Wolf Gymnasium on Wednesday night in York.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Green and White could not have gotten off to a better start. York scored the first nine points of the game and let 17-4 6:20 into the game. Darin Gordon, Matt Scamuffo, and Jared Wagner each had three pointers during that game-opening run.

• The Seahawks cut the Spartan lead to six with a 10-3 run but York quickly responded by pushing the lead back to 10 less than a minute later. St. Mary's again trimmed the York lead to six at 30-24 with 5:07 left. York closed out the half with a 16-5 run that turned the six-point lead into a 17-point bulge heading to the half. Brad Wesner, Jason Bady, and Scamuffo drilled three-pointers on the run as York took the big lead to the break.

• St. Mary's went on an early 6-1 run, cutting York's lead to 12 just under three minutes into the second half. The Spartans called timeout and preceded to go on a 13-2 run to push the lead to 23 with 11:50 left in the game. Kevin Callahan hit a three pointer with 4:13 left to increase the York lead to a game-high 24 points (76-52).

• The Spartan lead would hover in the 20's most of the second half until Danny Canary hit a pair of three pointers in the final minute of the game to make the final score appear a little closer than it really was.

The Spartans are now 42-24 all-time against the Seahawks as York swept the season series from the Seahawks ... The Spartans have not swept St. Mary's in a season series since the 2007-08 season … York defeated the Seahawks 85-84 in OT on January 9, 2008 in St. Mary's City and then completed the sweep with 79-73 win in York on February 9, 2008 … the Spartans held the reigning CAC Player of the Week Lavonte Sanders to two points on 1-of-10 shooting including 0-of-6 from the free throw line … Sanders did pull down eight rebounds in 24 minutes of play … The Spartans improve to 6-3 at home including 4-3 in league play … York is now 9-3 when leading at the half … the Spartans shot 52.9% (18-for-34) from the floor in the first half including 8-for-17 (47.1%) from three in the opening 20 minutes of play … York is now 10-2 when they hold an opponent to under 45% shooting from the floor … the Spartans blocked a season-high 10 shots … the 10 blocked shots are just one short of a school record that was established during the 1982-83 season at Catholic … it ties for second place as the Green and White blocked 10 shots against Thiel on December 8, 2004 … York's 13 three pointers marked the fifth time this year that the Spartans have reached double figures in made three point field goals … the 13 threes were one short of the season high set in the 40 point romp over Southern Virginia at home on January 7 … ten of the 12 Spartans who played scored in the victory … freshman Kevin Callahan tied his career-high with eight points … Zack Galic had seven points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of work … Galic was 3-for-3 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line … Matt Scamuffo's 13 points pushes his career total of 890 points … Scamuffo now has 142 career triples which ranks him eighth, one point back of Jason Saurbaugh (143) for seventh place … Scamuffo is four threes away from tying Jeff man for sixth place on the all-time list … Brad Wesner's second of his three pointers on the night gave him 100 career threes … Wesner has six games this year with three three-pointers or more in a game … Blayde Reich has reached double figures in scoring in seven of his last eight games … the Spartans led for 39:47 of the 40 minutes of the game … in the two games against St. Mary's, the Spartans have held the lead for 77:58 of a possible 80 minutes.

 

UP NEXT

The Spartans head back out on the road to start a three-game road swing on Saturday as York heads to Salisbury University on Saturday. The Spartans and Sea Gulls tip off from the Maggs Center at 4:00 pm.  The three game road trip matches the longest of the year. The Spartans opened the season with three road games.
