GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Both teams spent the first few minutes struggling to make buckets, combining for just seven points in the first four and a half minutes. York continued to struggle while Southern Virginia began to turn things around. The Knights went on an 11-0 run and led 15-3 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. With six minutes left, after a Sam Armstrong three-pointer for SVU, York trailed by a game-high 16 points, at 26-10.
• During the second portion of the opening half, York switched their defensive strategy to an extended 1-3-1 press and were able to put off the Knights hot shooting. In the final six minutes, the Spartans doubled-up on SVU, outscoring the opponents 14-7. Blayde Reich managed a layup with 33 seconds left, then Jared Wagner stole a pass and laid it in with three ticks on the clock to cut the deficit to nine at the break, 33-24. That was the first time the Spartans trailed by just single digits since 11-3.
• Once again, Southern Virginia was able to start the half well, pushing the lead back to 14, 42-28. York, however, had the answer. The Spartans replied with a 13-0 run kick-started by back-to-back Darin Gordon buckets. Wagner dunked to pull the Green and White within one, 42-41. Just over a minute later, York had their first lead, at 44-43, thanks to a Matt Scamuffo three-pointer.
• With two minutes remaining, Jason Bady extended the Spartan lead to five with a corner three, 57-52. But, the Knights would claw back to within three with 30 seconds left. Again, Bady stepped up. He got in a passing lane and came out of the pack with the ball before being fouled. He converted a free throw to make it a two-possession game. Rashay Douglas, of SVU, connected on a long ball to close the score to 58-57 with 10 seconds remaining, though. Wagner, a freshman, was fouled on the ensuing possession and calmly knocked down both free throws. The Knights struggled to get in the next inbound pass as Zack Galic, who defended the passer, forced two timeouts. The Hail Mary attempt would not go for the Knights as the Spartans held on to win 60-57.
